Went into the clubhouse yesterday after my game to look for last weeks competition results. Looking at the results I saw my name at the bottom of the sheet with a DQ and the reason stated was no score recorded for hole 8. Now as this was a stableford I was a little confused, so I rang the Secretary this morning. I was told that my card had no score on the 8th hole, and it needed either a zero or a dash where the points should be. I accepted this gracefully, as it was a rule i'd never heard of before. What I shall do in future is check my score card more thouroughly before signing. I wasn't in the prizes so no great loss, but there is a lesson learnt.

Just wait till I see the junior who marked my card. :D

Has anyone else been caught out by this?

I haven't personally but I know it has happened to others at my club in the past. We now put our scores in on the computer ourselves at the end of each round (don't worry the H/C does do a one on one check so you can't suddenly put in a net 59) and it doesn't allow you not to put a score in. That means if you blob a hole in stableford or N/R in a medal you put 0 in and it will automatically work out the score and recognise the N/R

ooo tough break, I must admit I was never aware of the requirement to do this- however I have always put a dash in when I score 0 points on a hole without thinking about it so I guess I'm lucky, I've also always added a dash in when someone's marked my card in a competition and left it blank just because I think it makes it clearer! I didn't actually realise I had to!

We enter our own scores on a computer anyway so it might not matter as you have to put in a 0, although the card has to be given in as well.

We probably have the same computor (how did I do) but for some reason with the Sunday stableford's we post them in the secretary's office and he enters them onto the computor on a Monday.....but saying that, this particular comp on the 25th wasn't even entered onto the computor.

Anyway, a valuble lesson was learnt, and a warning to others that this is the requirement.

Can anyone confirm this being the case re needing to put a dash or a 0 in for your score?I aint to sure about this being the case, thought you were responsible for your score so if you signed for say 31 points and your total points on your card added up to 31points then I cant see why you should have been DQ'd?
I may be wrong but I think your sec may be talking out his rearend.

This is why I phoned the secretary, it didn't make sence to me, but as I wasn't in the prizes I wasn't going to argue. I wouldn't mind having a look at the card though, as I said I should have looked at the card more carefully, but things like that don't normaly get past me.

Hi

I have just looked this up on R & A Decision book.

Under Rule 32-1b, if no score is returned on a hole in a Stableford competition, the competitor scores no points for that hole. I cannot see how he could possibly disqualify you.

I think your secretary owes you an apology if this is the correct ruling. Sometimes there is local club rules but that is very harsh.

Good luck

The player is responsible for marking his gross scores on the card only (along with his handicap marked on the card)....

The committee (or secretary) is responsible for the adding up although most players do this as it tends to make sure you have the gross score correct....

If you left the box empty then you could argue either way that you should be d'qd for not recording a gross score, although common sense (not always applied in golf) would suggest that it was a 'no score' and no points should be applied for that hole...

As long as your gross scores are correct (to be exact not less than what you took), your handicap and name and signature of you and the marker are all somewhere on the card then the score/card should stand as correct...

wackygolfer is right, I was about to put something similar, but I have experienced this before at one club where I was DQ'd for the same reason and I had finished 3rd on points, I think it comes down to the officials interpritation of the rules or simply 'This is the way we do things here' mentality. I think any club that follows this method of marking are being very very unfair and unreasonable. Why anyone should want a card filled in for every hole is beyond me, all thats needed are the shots taken that result in points. I wouldnt have DQ'd you.

Note that in Bogey, you still have to put the gross down on the card, not just the plus and minus. Loads of guys get d/q'ed every time for that.

Sam has it right, you always need to write down your gross score. It affects SS too.

Does your club use an online programme for recording competition results, calculating CSS etc?

If so, this is probably the excuse used as these programmes require an entry for all holes, though since the programme is manual entry you would have thought a bit of cdf could be applied.

My club now has a notice up that even if you NR, walk in etc you need a 0 on all non-completed holes.

The how did I do computer system certainly at Ascot allows you to put double digit scores in by typing the 1 and the other number. It doesn't move on after a single digit (e.g. a 4 or 5) is entered
