Simple question really- would you rather hack your way around 4 under your handicap playing some horrendous golf- winning ugly or play some tremoundous golf where just nothing drops and be 4 over your handicap.

Idle curiosity really, I hate both situations but feel better knowing I have played well rather than the feeling that it was all pure luck.

I would not be upset by either. One would suggest your recovery, scrambling, and putting is great and the other means you just need a bit more practice with your wedges or putter and it will come together. I would be very happy with either situation.

Most of my best rounds come from not actually playing that great.

The fewer shots you have the harder it will be to play horrendously and still shoot 4 under handicap.

You have to do a lot of things right to make that happen.

I'd rather have a good score. That way, if I played some good golf in the future I'd hope I could go even lower than 4 under handicap.

the wording of the question implies a competition; the answer therefore being 'winning ugly' - you are there to compete so this represents success!

any other time, including swindles, roll ups, bounce games or any other such 'game' success is represented by walking off the course happy with my game. This can range from a high number of fairways hit, GIR or scrambling; I've even been known to take an overall positive from 3/3 sand saves and ignore all the other shots!

even a round with little in the way of good, but without a single 'where did that one come from?' can be taken as a huge positive :)

if your ha disappointed is correct then anytime you play under it you have played some tremendous golf. The ability to get out of trouble and scramble holes takes a lot of skill. If your handicap is correct and you have played tremendous golf, I don't see how you have not broken it.

if im going to hack it around i might as well have a good score, rather that than has been the case the last few weeks, hitting good shots and 3 putting everything:(

If your handicap is accurate, you don't shoot under by luck. Golf is about getting the ball in the hole, if you can't do it looking good, do it ugly.

Ugly every time. I forget who said it, but one of the greats (might have been Hogan) said that he only hit around 6-7 really good shots per round and that it was all about minimising the damage with shots not quite out of the middle. Like others have said, I find I usually get good scores when I don't think I've played as well as the card indicates
