The second day of the tour. Consistently rated in the top 100 lists, Saunton has two excellent courses on offer: East and West. Today is the West course.

Firstly a good welcome from the pro shop. And what a pro shop. One of the biggest and best presented I've seen. Loads of makes, ranging from Under Armour, Hugo Boss to Sunderland. Shame they don't have an Internet presence. The practice facilities are good; short game area, putting green and two driving ranges for irons and then for woods.

We played this one off the whites. And was at least a three club wind....This track is a step up from yesterday's RND. Tough driving holes, hard greens, fluffy mounds and very penal rough. You stray off course you going to do well to find your ball let alone play it. Every hole was interesting and certainly if you hit the right club then scoring is possible, plus you have to plan which hole to try and score, and which holes not to nibble too much off.

Highlights are the par 5 third that has an elevated tee position and a risk/reward second shot to a raised green, and the potentially driveable par 4 15th.

A good handicap on this course would mean you'd travel well and have a very good short game. Controlled knock down shots are the order of the day and keeping it straight off the tee is important.

An excellent course and their food was great too!

Lovely course, with some great par 3's, especially 16 and 18. I prefer the East but the West is still a top course, and both are great value especially between November and March. We last played there when there had been flooding in the South, and yet both courses were in superb condition, with quick greens. True links golf.

The two tracks at Saunton are absolutely superb and situated in a stunning part of North Devon - a definite must play if you're in the area. The welcome you get from both staff and members is superb too. Hoping for a huge lottery win at some point soon so I can buy a house in Croyde and spend the rest of my golfing days playing there!!!

Agree with the above. Lovely courses. I prefer the East too. The only criticism I have of Saunton is that the food isn't up to much in the clubhouse. A minor gripe though.....

A great course as you travel down there to call in and play at is Burnham and Berrow. Another terrific course.

Cheers,

Snelly.
