Saunton - East or West

I played one of my English Amatuer Matchplay championships on the East.

A truly great links course.

I only played it off the champ tees and it was a very stern test.
Not sure what test the members tees set in comparison but I would say to go there and not play the east would be a travesty.
I have played the west and it also is a nice course and not as severe a test as the east.

East is longer and more challenging particularly in the wind - which we get quite a lot of.

West is a bit tighter and a different challenge a bit "technical".

I have to say that I prefer the East but its 51% to 49%!

If I have guests I usually do the West first to warm them up to the course and then do the East next to give them an even better experience. Everyone loves it and the facilities a real gem(s)!

Off the thread slightly but what do you think of Royal North Devon ?

Excellent course - there is a lot of friendly local rivalry.

RND On the up side the views are magnificant, the golfing artefacts in the club house are brilliant, the greens are superb.

The down side is that as much of it is public - there are a lot horses and sheep wandering about (and cra**ing everywhere) plus the odd walker and tourist/surfer wandering aimlessly across the course oblivious to the inherant dangers of a golf course. There are couple of "up and downy" holes on the back nine which I dont like personally and feel a bit samey.

I like playing there when I can but as a local rival Saunton is better IMHO

Thanks for that,i will give an unbiased assessment when i'm back from playing all 3 courses!

Both are magnificent but the East is my favourite.

Saunton is a gorgeous club and course. If I had one tiny gripe it would be that the food is only average. Still you go for the golf rather than the fine dining!
