Is the golf satnav on thd iPhone legal. The R&A say, it's legal to use this type of technology. But the device must be unable to measure windspeed or temperature. Even if the capability is disabled. The iPhone can measure
windspeed and temperature so that must make all the golf apps illegal.

thats my understanding too although 3rd generation iphones cant measure windspeed so apps on them may not be?
its all a bit of a minefield i was looking in the summer and decided safest route was a purpose designed gps un it

There have been several threads on this over the last few months

Basically the Iphone cannot be used in a competition of any kind, Social Golf is fine as long as your mates are happy.

Its all to do with certain apps that come with the phone like compass .

Interestingly the R & A have released a Rules App for Iphone, which you therefore cannot refer to during a competition as you would be DQ'd

Personally I dont think knowing which way is north is going to help one bit

Fragger

You can use the phone to look at the rules app on the course. You can also send messages and make calls (if you wish)

It is ONLY when you use the phone as a DMD that it become illegal (if offending apps are on it)

I have sonocaddie on my i phone, its pretty good, however I would say I dont use it now as bothered about:
1. Having phone on the course
2. Losing or damaging it (too much else stored on it)
3. Having clients call me during a round (even on silent the missed calls flash up on screen)

Gone back to GPS although thats pretty well knackered now, waiting for January sales.
