Have an old basic Garmin Nuvi 215, has done the job ok but its about 7 years old years old and a bit small, looked into updating the maps online today after noticing some missing new UK roads recently whilst driving south and it trying to take me on some very odd route choices lately. However Garmin want £50 to do so which I ain't gonna pay given its an old unit and I can get a newish 5" tom tom for not much more with new maps.

Question is are there any of the less well known brands anyone would recommend to save money or do you think its best to stick with Garmin/Tomtom etc?

Stick with those two. I know people who went cheap and the issue is not so much with mapping as speed of locking onto the satellite and then holding onto that lock. Maybe they have improved in the last few years but personally I would stay with Garmin / Tom Tom.

Not sure on what's good mate as rarely use one but just to give you the heads up Halford have 15% off ALL SatNav's at the moment.

My old sat nav was clearly set up for horse and cart travel so I bought a Garmin Nuvi57 LM last week and got £20 off by trading the old one. It seems absolutely fine to me and cost £70 with the trade in and life time map updates

I've had a few over the years, don't need one now as all the Nissan company cars I get have them built in.
But if I did have to go out and buy one it would be a Garmin.

Got a tom tom 720, does Europe etc, it is more than ready for updating I got a email asking to update said sat nav. They originally wanted about £70 it was reduced to £40 but halfords did a tom tom the other week which had European maps on for about £85. Excellent sat nav but the update cost are ridiculous.

I would not bother with the cheaper brands outside the big 2. Look attractive on the surface, but when you dig a little further down you quickly realise the savings are not worth the hassle that comes with it. Old adage - you get what you pay for. I use one 8 years old and yes at times it's telling me I am driving in a field - who cares, it sorts itself out eventually
