first win in 19 years

"Two-time Major Champion Sandy Lyle captured an emotional first tournament victory in 19 years with a hard fought win in the inaugural ISPS Handa Senior World Championship presented by Mission Hills China.

Lyle had been without a victory since winning the last of his 18 European Tour titles in the 1992 Volvo Masters but the Scot brought that barren run to a commanding end with a flawless final round 70 over the World Cup Course at Mission Hills to finish on 12 under par 204, three strokes clear of Australian Peter Fowler."

Wow, 19 years. Good for him. It must be hard to have been a major champion and a proven winnner and to go so long without success. Will always have a soft spot for him after that marvellous birdie on 18 to win at Augusta. First British winner of the Masters.

Well done Sandy. Surprised though that he only won 18 European Tour titles - talent deserved far more than that.

Great memories of him at Wentworth one year when he was in one of the first groups out on final day and therefore way out of contention. One of the quickest rounds of golf I've ever seen - hardly bothered with practice swings or reading putts, but the ball striking was awesome and he was hitting it miles! Think he still put together a sub-par round. Just showed what he could do when the pressure was off!

At last !

I really though that when he turned senior he would have had a chance. It's taken a couple of years, but, he's one an event at last. Well done Sandy.

I wonder how he would have fared if he had been playing at his peak on the current main Tour ? he could certainly mix it with the best in his era.

Nice one Sandy - used to call on his mum and dad, who lived next to Hawkstone Park in Shropshire, in my first job as a financial adviser in 1989! Really nice people.
