Hi All,
Can anyone recommend a good sand wedge, have one in my iron set (cobra) but I just seem to strugle to get out the sand with it, so all your expert advice would be welcome.
If I hit straight I would not need one in theory :)
Thanks

With the very greatest of respect, it may be more to do with your technique than the club itself. I'm hopeless at getting out of bunkers, but I know it's nothing to do with my clubs! ;)

Why not take a lesson in the art of bunker escape? I certainly plan to do the same before the start of the new season.

All the best! :)

Also, if you're struggling to get out of the sand when playing through the winter, don't be too hard on yourself as bunker play is a nightmare just now what with soaking wet or frozen sand!

There are so many variables that it's hard to just say go and get x wedge.

What sort of sand do you struggle in? Is it deep sand or just a light covering? Do you know how a SW is actually designed to work? Are you digging for oil with your swing or just trying to take a slither of sand under the ball??

I know it's boring advice, but go see a pro, they are best equipped to help by either changing your swing or suggesting a club that suits.

Thanks I know most of it is me, and will have a lesson as soon as spring arrives, It seems to me that some sand weges appear to shift more sand than others,I have put my old wilson forged wedge in the bag and find it better than the cobra, As allways just looking for that MAGIC club.
Thanks

With a sandwedge coming from a iron set it tends to be bulkly like you say,and when the face is open there is over 10mm of leading edge on show which is great for fluffy sand not so good for anything else.

Maybe try a couple specialist wedges Vokeys etc and see if they work better,

Most of the sand irons that come with sets today look horrible and while they may do the designed job from bnkers they hardly inspire confidence, and less so from a grassy lie.

I agree with the advice to look at technique over kit first. Once you can at least escape everytime even if you are not that close then you can look at what else you want from your sand wedge.

I know that being a 26 h'capper you might want to take this with a pinch of salt. But I find in winter, in greenside bunkers that are very wet or frozen, and there is very little 'give' in the sand, that I get on better with my 60 degree lob wedge than my 56 dgree SW. I guess this might be because of the LW having less bounce than the SW.

I guess that what I'm trying to say, is that on the harder surface, I have to pick the ball more cleanly of the sand, and if I do that with the SW, I end up thinning the ball horridly.

I hope that makes sense. But as I said, I'm a high h'capper so I might be completly wrong.
