I HATE WINTER ,i am starting to struggle now not being able to play regular golf, because of that stupid thing called work i leave in the morning when its dark and come home when its dark, no golf played, anyone else feeling the same or am i the only golf junkie with the D.T's

Im not so bad a fortnight was a wash out but it hasn't rained since and last week was fine if a rather cold affair. Tomorrow am for the winter 12 hole comp and then sunday for the full 18 in the polar bears competition.
Its the midweek golf ive been missing for almost a year now since changing jobs.

the only saving grace is that I work flexi-hours so can take Friday afternoon off. It's not enough for 18-holes but I can squeeze in 12 sometimes. Then again I can take 1 day a month off to get in 18.

Not enough, but just about keeps me sane

You're not alone Boabski, it is a 50 minute drive to my nearest driving range so I don't get any range time ever really. On a winter weekend if it's not freezing or snowed in I can practice at two local clubs I'm member of or at a cricket pitch which is only a few hundred yards away. It's great as I get to hit off grass rather than mats.
I got myself a weights bench and rower a couple of years back to keep fit in the winter and I also have a garden golf net so at least I can hit balls through the winter evenings under a floodlight - it was a good investmest, only downside being you can't see how well you are hitting it, you can only guess by how the strike feels.
I dont really play any courses in winter, I just fit in an hour here and there at the club practice areas, cricket pitch or my golf net at home. Roll on April!

not played for 3 weeks like you said boabski its dark when i go to work and dark when i finish hoping to get 18 in tomorrow been on the range a bit but its just not the same as the real thing.ian mc

hi. At least you can get out to play at the moment. Its now been 6 weeks since my injury and still no sign of being able to make a swing,so count your blessings lol.My head is totaly done in

Some time since I last played. Working during the week (come home in the dark!) leaves just the weekends. Fancied playing today but very cold and very wet. Not much incentive to go and play there then!
Seems daft, we pay al that money in club subs only to stay away in the winter!
Perhaps I'l work on my swing down the driving range, at least it's under cover.

To be honest I'm not too fussed about playing regularly. I've been lucky that my course has been fully open (and I won last week) but I really concentrate on grooving me swing.

I have a lesson every 6-8 weeks with a teaching pro who completely remodelled my swing over the past summer and we are now fine tuning and working on the scoring zone.

Unless I have a competition I don't go out to play at weekends. On Saturday I go to the range and work on my full swing concentrating on a nice 3/4 length swing, getting the club in the right position and tempo. I usually only hit 2 buckets working up from lob wedge to driver and then back down.

On a Sunday I work on my short game. The only downside about the practice facilities at my club is the crappy bunker and poorly kept chipping green. As a result if I want to chip and putt I use the green at the range. If I want to hit 40-100 yard shots I go to myclubs practice ground.

I know its hard in winter to get a full fix of golf but I find that if I'm working on my game and can see some improvement I feel my time has been better spent than playing for 4 hours in the cold on hard frosty greens, off mats (although not at Royal Ascot - all tees open) to temporary greens (again our greens are still in use and in good knick)

Just be patient. Today is the shortest day so the long nights are coming!!!

Been lucky enough to play every week through the winter so far(touch wood).
I also manage to get out during the week as I regulary have 2 days off a week not including sundays.
Just need the frost to go away tonight as I am hopefuly playing at Monifieth tomorrow.

Thankfully my home course has been open for the majority of the year-only close for 3-4 days this year including one sunday during the summer.

I try and get out every weekend either Sat or Sun-Managed to play this morning beautiful dry but cold morning-only saw about 4 other groups on the course-it was bliss.

I actually do suffer with SAD the doc reckons. I am a real summerry person, I love sunbathing and just being out i n the fresh air in general. I always come back off our october holiday and end up depressed cos of the shite weather. I just have to keep myself busy to avoid getting too p-o'd!

Hoping to have a game of golf between xmas and new year though so that will liven spirits up.

Tpred I live about 20 minutes from Swords- I play in Roganstown just outside Swords-designed by Christy O'Connor Jnr. Kmnow Swords reasonable well as my brother lives there and my daughter works part time in the local shopping centre The Pavillon.

Madanda where did you work?

yes i know the pavillions centre well.I am over there for a weekend in january we are having a party at the carnegie hotel in swords.Have you tried the golf shop on airside, when i was over there in the summer i got myself some cheap good quality clothing.
We visit her daughter quite regular so may bump into you sometime hopefully with my clubs lol

Tpred--The golf shop in Airside not the best around-three better shops within 20 mins of Swords
McGuirks in Howth and/or Blanchardstown and Premier Golf in Ballymun.

When you are over next with the clubs give a pm beforehand and i will invite you to play Roganstown-subject to us both being available.

Range is as good as it gets for me, just to keep the swing ticking over untill March. Occasional game "down the coast" but thats it.

World of Golf or Gailes does me.
