The season was finishing too quickly for me, my ball hitting was very good but my scoring was not.

Bad kick, three putts, etc made the score just a wee bit out of the prizes but good enough to pick up the side bet.

Played with a newish player to me, well known in the club and I received ongoing advice - don't sway, hands not coming in right etc.

I now can't keep the ball on the fairway, driving two thirds the normal distance, chipping, putting, even the club selection is iffy!!

20 plus strokes worse today than my recent average and pain in back and wrist so no chance of a turnaround in the near future.

Any one else have a bad reaction to 'good' advice"?

I hope he wasn't giving you advice during the comp?

Truthfully I'd take advice with a bit of a pinch of salt from a good player who isn't qualified or experienced in teaching the golf swing. Sure I might consider what they say but not sure I'd actively make changes based upon their advice...what works for him isn't necessarily what will work for you.

Easy said but...go see a teaching pro would be my advice.

What she said.

I remember someone giving me advice recently, it was exactly the opposite as to what I was working on with the pro.

I have also played with people where the pro is telling them one thing and me to do the exact opposite. It comes down to what your swing was like before and your ability. I need to use less right hand, this other person needed to engage their right hand more.

I may end up doing this but as of now I am just hoping my good striking will return if I can ease the 'advice' out of my thinking.

To undermine the confidence is much easier than to ease it back into the fore front of golf thinking and even a pro would have a problem with this, I suspect.

Let's hope time is a healer but as I am in two finals next week, time better work fast.

My main reason for writing this was to see if others had any experience similar to mine or am I too open to this type of flawed advice.

Was this guy giving you advice during a competition? If so he should be disqualified!

He sounds a right pain in the derrière!

Golf is full of people forcing their poor knowledge unrequested. In future just thank them after the first interaction and say you're better playing your own game.

If I was you I'd head for the range with a clear plan...to visualise you hitting the ball as you know you can without a technical aspect. Step on the mat and hit the ball with that vision. Acknowledge the strike, ball flight etc but without questioning or doubting rather than just seeing it and accepting it. Then hit another with the same vision and acceptance and then another. Keep going without losing faith that it will click - keep the vision and faith of you doing what you can uppermost in your mind. Then when you strike it well don't question and ask "what was different" rather than keep hitting with faith and confidence...

It has worked for me in the past when my head was full of technical elements and I was struggling.

You could also try the "back/hit" routine which is equally effective. Basically you have to say (either inwardly or outloud) the word "back" at the EXACT PRECISE moment when you're at the top of your back swing and the word "hit" when you EXACTLY PRECISELY impact the ball. Basically it occupies the conscious mind with something relative to the activity whilst allowing your sub conscious to perform the action...check out The Inner Game by Tim Gallwey which is an excellent psychology book.

Good luck.

whilst it's only more advice, mine would be to 'ease the thinking out of your swing'.

as someone e.lse highlighted above - visulise the shot you want to hit, grab a club and just do it...

frequently (and in answer to your question it happens frequently) it's more about the introduction of thinking to a process yuour sub-concious has previously handled (whatever the result!) that creates the underlying issues you are experiencing - even the introduction of a simple must do element!

Why are folk so keen to DQ?

It's only a 2 shot penalty! For every instance though.

There's not a lot that is really DQ.

@OP. The advice may/may not have been correct, but the mistake you made was committing to it. Much better, imo, to try it and, if it doesn't seem to be working, reject it - at least until you find a better way to implement what the advice is attempting to achieve. And, of course, this 'advice' should be given the same amount of sceptical credence as any from a non-professional!

Just because the guy is a low handicapper, doesn't mean his advice will be sound - for you!

OP doesn't say what handicap the 'interferer' was, could be a low man but I'd guess around 9:rolleyes:

I am pleased to say my courses greens are just starting to improve, they are at their best since March and hopefully will continue to improve week on week.

Actually the whole course is starting to come along, I predict a cracking Winter of golf, even if the weather is wintery!

:D

Thanks for reminding me. Trilby Tour material (41 points) yesterday just letting the swing happen!

Note my advice re advice!

Bit harsh on offering some friendly advice, seriously if you see someone who is just all over the place a groaning what do you do ? I am sure lots of you would offer up some kind of advice. I only offer if asked or discuss the problems and solutions I have gone through. Sometimes stuff is glaringly obvious but to offer insight into it is unwelcome, which is fine, but shut up and go look for your own ball!

I have never and would never offer advice to anyone.

Not even "give up and take knitting"? But seriously you have never said see the pro, don't stand there etc..

Thanks for all your contributions.

He is a lower handicapper but we are both single figures, not a lot between us, however I, instead of turning my trunk tend to go back on to my right foot and use this movement to create the power into the shot.

This works well for me but he is the opposite and he turns his body more and also delays his hands coming into the ball, with the result he pings the ball away with what looks like no effort - I on the other hand must display my effort!

This lots of movement, in his opinion, was the reason for his 'help' and my undoing.

My greater movement still allows me to hit the ball up with the younger bucks and as I have already stated, I have had a good season which was getting even better - hence my frustration.

Thanks again folks!

So did you do any trunk moving exercises or just thought I will try it ? It seems like a massive fundamental change. One I think I would have seen a pro about myself and thanked my mate for suggesting it be looked at. Anything that makes the ball go with less effort is worth researching and learning about... Swing easy and your swing will last longer IMO that is why I think Nicklaus' record will stay, these youngsters are just an injury waiting to happen or a miss timing away from disaster
