I played in our club Foxes Championship yesterday afternoon and the round took 5 hours. I was in the first group out and there was a sort of society (read members day, because we do not do societies as such) ahead. When we started we had 2 clear holes in front of us, but we caught up with them by the 3rd hole. It was painful to watch. They walked at the speed of pregnant crabs, took ages over every shot, wouldn't play their 2nd shots from 300 yards out on par-4's until the green had cleared, and would then duff their shots only about 50 yards forward! We had to wait ages to play every shot, and frankly I didn't play well (29 points) because of all the hanging around. I feel sorry for the members of clubs who take a lot of society bookings!

I should add that every member of our Foxes section complained about the slow pace of play, and although we started just after midday, it was getting pretty cold and dark by the time the last group came in.

BTW, even when they lost balls, the society group ahead never seemed to even consider calling us through. Not that it would have helped that much anyway because the group ahead of them were just as slow!

5-hour rounds rarely enjoyable, what did the on-site comp committee member do about it, it sounds like not much

Also for you personally in all your years why havnt you practiced how best to take a shot after a delay (I've not been playing that long in comparison but as soon as I realised that delays were likely to influence my play of next shot I figured i'd need to find a way to deal with it so that a slow pace didn't wreck my round)

Come off it Baz, you know, as I know, the rules of golf don't allow ANYBODY to come through a society!

Isn't the standard response "its backed up, no point playing through" ....normally seniors.

Two options:

1) phone pro shop and ask for assistance

2) start playing as close as poss

To be the club is at fault here for allowing a society out before a comp. we have societies but they are not allowed out before our roll ups (tee block booked 7:45-9am) or after a medal where tee is block booked (6am to 10am)

But on the plus side did you get to the course OK without being held up by any of those nasty asylum seekers clogging up the roads in their cars?

In my last round in Portugal last week, it took 2 and three quarter hours to play the first 9 holes. That was enough for me I came off the course.

Played in a fourball yesterday and a pp put his ball in some trees on the right hand side. We had a look and I waved through two women who had caught us up. We were on the 14th and it is 586 yd par five. Women's tees are 120 yd shorter.
There tee shots went 100 yd next shot 50 yd, same again, one of the women bladdered her third but it took an age to finish the hole.
The next hole was the same. All the way to the 18th.
when we caught them up in 19th, I helped them put scores in the computer. It was there first ever comp. they joined the club a week or so ago and both play off 36.
Yes they held us up, but how are you to know ?
They said in the clubhouse, they were nervous playing on front of an audience. Yup bin there. Helping them put scores in computer. One would have scored 29 points, but struggled over last five holes. Yup bin there as well.
on a positive, the weather was gorgeous for an October days golf.

I play in our club's seniors comps most weeks and they are nothing like as slow as these guys. Rounds rarely take more than 4 hours. Incidentally the 'society' groups seemed to be arranged in three-balls, so they shouldn't really have been that slow!

It was a flippant remark... I didn't mean it

It always seems to me that in "societies" it doesn't take much for 1 person of the group to hit a ball into the long stuff on each hole and what ensues is a group search for the ball and then they go about the business of their own shots. It very quickly snowballs.

Yes thanks, because my journey was made much later than the rush hour and the school run! BTW, I am not talking about today's asylum seekers/economic migrants, but those who were let in under the Blair Government ten or more years ago. They are the ones who now have the cars and the kids.

Oh look another slow play thread. Why anyone complains about playing golf and being outside enjoying the fresh air and company is beyond me.

5 hrs doing something I love! Man alive, whatever next?!
