Ryder Cup 2025

He only half the time that everyone else had so it's right and proper.....
Hopefully the bulk of the team - front and backroom - will be similar..

To be honest, I think both captains should be appointed for a home and away leg each time. Makes it a bit more personal, bit of a head to head challenge to build on in the press etc

That's great news. I'm always baffled why they don't stay on more often, other than it being a lot of work and they don't fancy it I guess. Since it's so hard to win an away Ryder Cup, I think keeping on the captain who's already won a home one gives you a better chance.

Go on, I'll buck the trend. I think it's a shame that he is doing it again. Not because he isn't eminently qualified, he is, or because I don't like him, I do. I just think it is one of those roles you do once and then pass on to the next person.

There are lots of potential candidates, it's a shame someone else isn't getting a crack at it.

But getting the captain's gig for an away RC doesn't feel like a fair crack of the whip to me. I think it makes more sense that each captain does two - the home one first and then an away leg. (Unless they make an absolute horlix of the home leg somehow.)

Great news this, not just that he’s the best man for the job, but also because it’s makes sense that the captain does home and away. The odds are stacked against him winning it twice, but that seems fair. Always felt a bit sorry for Harrington, whistling straits was an impossible task, right man, wrong time.

Who?
There is a very short list of potentials as far as I can see!

I suppose that you also have to bear in mind that Donald has shown his loyalty to the tour. You always have the risk of picking someone else and have LIV get out the cheque book again.

But there was a merger/truce so surely Poults, Westy etc are all eligible again?

Once suspects that they are never going to be eligible again until the Saudi money has taken hold of the other tours and it is 'requested' that a LIV golfer be picked as captain.

If Europe lose, does the demand to change captain dominate the next phase leading up to their second go? How bad do you have to be to get replaced? Faldo bad?

I just like the idea of it being an honour that gets passed along.

There is a little bit of irony in that statement. He played most of his golf in the US so his loyalty to the European tour is not overwhelming and certainly not at the same level as say a Thomas Bjorn for example. Not sure his credentials on that front are too different from many of those now excluded.

Eligibility etc. aside I genuinely think that Poulter has an opportunity to be the worst ever Ryder cap captain. I think he'd give Hal Sutton a good challenge for top spot.
Nothing I've ever seen or heard from Poulter suggests he cares about anyone other than himself. I think he'd manage the European team like Tom Watson managed the US but without any of the goodwill and legacy Watson had available to shred.
