Drove my ball into a bunker today but not before it hit the soft muddy fairway first and then rolled into the bunker with a huge lump of mud attached!

There was also a puddle in the bunker which at address I would have stood in, so I picked up the ball to drop it at my nearest point of relief inside the bunker and away from the puddle, BUT, could I have cleaned the ball once lifted? All my playing partners didn't know :mmm:

I believe you can Fish - but im sure the experts will be along soon

The ball may be cleaned when lifted under Rule 25-1b, which was the rule you were proceeding under.

I remember reading once that there were only 3 situations where you couldn't clean your ball after picking it up.

Lifting it to identify it.
When checking for damage.
When marking and lifting not on the green if it's in the way.

Hopefully I've remembered that right!

That makes a lot of sense and easier to remember than all the reasons for when we can.

That's still the case. Can clean it at any time when it is lifted under a rule except those three instances - which are listed in rule 21.
