In order not to hijack Smiffy's thread about a rules issue

The last 2 competitions I have played in I have seen/played with people who have no idea of the basic rules as in

1 .. the vice captain wasn't aware that you couldnt declare a ball lost

2 .. 2 guys in front of us in a foursomes decided that a provisional off the tee was played by the same person who hit the original tee shot

3 .. same foursomes comp only this time our playing partners, one guy hit the tee shot and the other, not wanting to walk back to his bag, hit the provisional with his partners driver

4 .. One played the wrong ball in a bunker

5 .. One player insisted that if he hit a provisional he was bound to search for his original ball

6 .. the same player as in 5, said that he couldn't hit another shot with his provisional even if he duffed it off the tee

I started to feel that they didn't want to play with someone who, in the nicest possible way, mentioned these indescretions to them.

My question is - is it better not to know the rules as in "ignorance is bliss"?

sorry, i don't understand number 5. i must be reading it wrong. he is bound to search for his original surely? his provisional is there to use if he cannot find his original ball.. like i said, im probably reading it wrong..
also, I like lear ning the rules on the course, it does all depend on the person giving the advice though. Some people can be great to learn from, some make you want to throttle them. It's always better to know the rules, even if we sometimes let some things go..

They can share clubs but between them they most not carry more than 14 as I remember

If they have a maximum of 14 clubs between them then they can share. Over 14 and they can't.

He is a player who I play in a lot of comps with. I had chatted with him after a hole had been played out, where he scored a 9 - his 3rd shot put him in a really nasty place. I asked him why he didnt play a provisional and if he had stiffed it to the pin he could have not bothered to search for his original ball. He said that if you play a provisional you are bound, by the rules, to search for your original ball

I think the point that I was making is that it doesn't necessarily matter how nicely you mention the infingement some people don't take kindly and, the fact is, if you know the rule you feel obliged to call it
