Apologies for vague title- couldn't think of a succinct summary.

Last week as we walked off green, I complimented one of my FCs on her rather nice chip from the fringe.
She commented that it was difficult because of the sprinkler head on her line.

I drew her attention to our local rule on back of card re relief from them around the green, saying i never can remember it precisely as it depends on where sprinkler is in relation to both green and ball.
The other FC said, "I thought you could only get relief if you were putting from off the green, not chipping"
(which is not in the rule)

This got me to thinking- a lot of rules vary depending on WHERE your ball is, ie on the tee, on the green, through the green, in a hazard etc.

But do ANY depend on the club you intend to use?
I assume not, because the rules depend on what has happened, and what the current situtation is, not on what is about to happen.

Like you I think not, however I have seen a local rule stating that you should only play an iron or club with no less than 23 degrees of loft.
And there isn't a rule of golf which tells you or suggests what club you should use to hit the ball. the local rule was put in place to stop players reaching a road adjacent to the hole.

A local rule specifying what club you must or may not use is not a legitimate one.
Considering the differences in the distances players can achieve with a particular club, that one seems a bit pointless anyway. McIlroy puts a superb 5 iron on a green 210 yards away in the Open. I'm happy if I get my driver that far.

Atticus mentions that we are told we should use the club you would have made a stroke with when locating the nearest point of relief. After doing that, however, there is no restriction to your choice of club to play the next stroke with.

Pieman's club, Bushey, has a notice board on one of the par 5's stating something like no more than a 5 iron to be used off the tee due to Houses running down the right,, ( one of them is his!! )

Funny thing is he hits a 5 iron about as far as my driver!! ( well at least he used to until I Lofted Up!! )
