Hi people,

Looking for a little guidance on Rules School level 2 which I'm looking to do next year.

Is the level 2 exam an open book exam and are you expected to be simply know the options for a re drop, say, or are you expected to actually be able to quote from memory, rule, paragraph and sub section numbers i.e "20-2/c"?

My fear is that I'm confident I can remember the what and when but not the rule and paragraph number in question so it essential?

Cheers

I believe the expectation is to be able to navigate around the rules with knowledge of the primary rule sections.
More focus on how to find relevant rule, and how to apply it in practical situations (use the book rather than memory!) than memorising either subsections or relevant decision numbers.

Your fear should be unfounded - biggest challenge is usually getting on one in the first place.

I did one last year. Unless it's changed:

There are 2 parts really - a practical session which is not evaluated whereyou spend time going through senarios in a group with qualified referees.

The exam is in 3 parts, a section where you are asked to name rules and paragraphs that apply to given situations. eg ball lost in rough. No help with this.

A multiple choice section on individual questions around specific situations. No help with this.

A section based around a theoretical 9 holes where rules and decisions are needed - approx 4 per hole. You can (must) use the Rules and decisions book for this.

The key thing is you are expected to know the rules by number (with sub sections if possible). You are expected to be able to use the decisions book to find specific decisions based on key words used in the question.

The exam was nearly 3 hours from memory- just about everyone ran out of time.

Tactic is to focus on section 3 which is open book and the majority of the marks.

A lot more difficult than I thought.

so... yes then. that's a great answer and very helpful, thanks.

I did the level 1 exam a fortnight ago. That was followed a similar format except it was all 'open book'. had an hour to 30 multi choice and then 5 holes scenarios with 4 questions per hole - 50 marks in total I guess - just like the online one. Actually only took 20 mins so did them all again and compared. Just as well as I had 2 or 3 differences! I now have a nice serstificate (as my Mum would call it) telling me I passed :-)

Happy I can learn the rules - just need to get my head down and learn rule and paragraph numbers now...

Thanks again.

Well done Alan. I wanted you do the course but it became obvious that it was a job for the boys and there was little chance of getting on a course

The level 1 school I did was the inaugural one and, as far as I can see, the same as the online one. My hope was that it would be considered a little more formal and a better stepping stone to the level 2 and bump me up the list when it appears...

It actually was a good day out tbh. £25 paid for training, doing the exam, being sent certificate and sarnies and chips for lunch and a few rounds of coffee. Good value I thought. I would recommend it.

With all the discussion that are inevitable though, it's a struggle to get it all done in a day.

Hopefully they consider it successful and will run more.
