Just tell them straight, I AM A GOLF GEEK and carry the rules book in my golf bag any problems or queries I just whip it out. Usually when playing with mates the rule book stays in the house and we play our own rules.
You have the responsibility as a golfer to uphold the rules and regulation of our great sport.

Def, especially in competition we all have a duty to our fellow golfers to report these things on the card and to the commitee, if necessary. You have to tell the offender straight but politely. Sometimes it can be their misunderstanding of the rules so it's up to us to make them understand.

I had one last year in Club Championship tie, I was convinced something wasn't right earlier in the round, but thought I was being paranoid.

Something else I should have picked up on is before we teed off he marked 5 balls I thought this was a little strange but guessed he must have expected to lose a few.

Then on the 13th he hit his ball into heavy rough so I being the kind fellow that I am helped him to search for his ball.
I was searching in the spot where we saw it come down but he went 30 yards further forward and lo and behold found his ball in a nice spot out of the rough, he chipped on and holed out to tie the match.
I was boiling at this point and decided I was not goung to continue playing with him so I conceeded the match and headed back to the clubhouse he never came in to enter the result but just headed home in his car hoped he was feeling guilty.
I thought about reporting him but had no hard evidence just a hunch.

Toad, I feel for you mate, I bet that has pissed you off nearly every day since that happened? Have you seen the bloke since?

Don’t know what I would have done in the same situation, But him not coming in the club after is a sure sign he was up to no good.

Thankfully never seen him since as he only plays in 3 comps a year at the club all the major ones funny enough, I think he likes to keep his handicap high m8.
God I hope I don't get him this year.

John I just said I did not wish to play with him anymore never accused him of anything but was biting my lip m8.
If an opponent walked off against me I would be trying to convince him to play on or asking for an explanation why but he never said a thing to me.

had this in a league match a couple of years back, guy whom had a reputation kept knocking it into the deep cabbage and I would find it and think 'he aint hitting that any further than 40 yards' then lo and behold he would knock it onto the green 150 yrds away!! This happened 3 times but the 4th time on the 17th with me 1up I did not move to where my ball was and insisted on staying put, several times he said that it was ok he had his ball so I could go over to my ball now (other side of fairway) but I was not moving and suprise suprise he had to wedge out 30 yards.......that was game over.I am convinced if I had moved he would have greened it again. After the game my clubmate who had been going down 1 of the fairways parralel to the one we were on said 'you would win the 10th yeah?'. I informed him he had greened it from that horrendous lie (my clubmate had actually found his ball on that hole),he could not believe me, said a JCB digger on steriods could not have moved it 60 yards!!
Left a sour taste in my mouth and have played him again since and aint left his side in the rough!!

I once played in a comp and this fella was constantly watching me mark my balls and had a angry twitch, I ignored him thinking he must have a stressful job and so on. Anyway we where on the back nine when I sliced the ball into the rough, and said angry fellow helped me look for my ball (which was nice of the angry chap) and I found my ball which must have gone further than expected and chipped on and holed out to tie the match. This angry fella, woohooo I have never see anyone's face so red, in fact I feared for my life, so just drove home knowing I had won the battle, but to this day I don't know what tipped Mr Stress over the edge.

the end.

I think the people that really make my blood boil are the ones who know the rules and still act stupid. A real pet hate of mine in when someone tee's up infront of the markers, even an inch I can't stand. I'm always a foot behing but I cant understand people who insist on teeing up slight,y infront of them. I know it's not a hanging offence but that pisses me off big time...........

It may sound gay but they're only cheating themselves. Only playing 3 comps a year just shows how much a cheat he is, just make sure all the boys know the crack with him then you'd be supprise how quickly he may change, or better yet disappear. remember never let anyone spoil your game.

When someone does this I always say "Is this hole too long for you?" It's light-hearted, makes them smile , but also politely points out their mistake.

In competiton this sort of thing would roast my gizzard. In a 'friendly' I would perhaps think -'pr@t'

Either way it seems you have ended up carrying the can for it which is a shame and I do it often much to the detriment of my pleasure of the game.

The suggestions already given seem pretty good. Perhaps revenge IS a dish best served cold

There's always a balance to be struck between making sure your opponent doesn't break the rules and conducting the game in the spirit of friendly competition.

An example.

Pal was playing a match years ago. Both players on 1st green in two. Pal marked ball on green while other putted. When it was his turn he stepped back onto green but did make the mistake of dropping the ball down towards his marker before replacing it. His opponent claimed the hole because he thought my pal was testing the green!

My pal walked off conceding the match on the 1st hole saying that if his opponent was so desperate to win then he might as well be given the match if he was gonna continue in that vain.

What d'you think?

Difficult one but obviously gamesmanship. It's easy to be sitting here thinking about how I would have reacted, but I don't take lightly to this type of ploy. I think that I would possibly have told the opponent that he was quite welcome to his wrong opinion but I would still putt out and submit the query and any further queries arising in the game to the comittee on completion of the round for their consideration - all as allowed for in the rules of golf. The match would of course have to be continued on the basis of either scenario being correct.

I would of course watch the bu33er like a hawk for the rest of the round and if possible do to him as he would do to me.

if you drop the ball, you drop the ball simple as that, the guy who claimed the hole is a hole, an @sshole your mate is right , i wouldnt wanna play a round with a muppet like that. Golf is meant to be fun ,we dont play golf to put our serious political faces on !
