Slightly confused about this one!

Both me and the old man were on the green in yesterday's round. I didnt mark my ball, he putted his and it struck mine. What's the ruling now, was i right to replace my ball where it had been before it was hit and who is penalised shots?

Its all fairly moot as it was just a friendly 18 holes but it might teach me to mark my ball in the future!

So what's the reasoning behind the difference..?
Anyone got an idea

It doesn't affect the "rest of the field" as the match is only between the opponents on the green so any benefit that might be gained only affects the match.
Either opponent can mark the ball/request that the ball is marked.

Is it not Rule 18 that applies in this case as the OP's ball was at rest when it was hit, whilst Rule 19 applies to a the ball that hit his, as it was the ball in motion?

Whilst we're on the subject what happens if a player marks his ball with a tee and you hit the tee? I'm guessing nothing

Having rules for matchplay and different rules for strokeplay just makes the game more confusing and rules harder to remember. Overhaul is required.

Can't see any reason why an overhaul is needed - the governing bodies are always progressing with the rules and adapting - we all have a rule book to read if needed and always help on hand if needed.

You missed the US Open it seems. Do you carry round the decisions folder also

Sorry what was wrong the US Open ?

And I have a smart phone that enables me to search. I also have the option to play a second ball and then check afterwards.
