This might sound a bit strange, but go with me....

FAQ 11 on rule 14-3 states that you cannot take a practice swing during a stipulated round with any device designed as a training or swing aid. (Decision 14-3/10)

Now, don't mock me for this but I've recently discovered that I can get quite a good swing "feel" by taking a few practice swings with a golf umbrella! During a recent match I lost my swing entirely and a few swishes like that might have helped me find it again....

But would it have been legal? It's not been designed as a swing aid but could almost certainly be deemed "unusual use" of equipment.

Taking it from a different angle, I'm one of those sad gits that you will often see standing in the supermarket or the office or wherever swinging some sort of imaginary golf club or just about anything that can substitute for one. It's not beyond the realms of the possible that during a round I might absent-mindedly make a swing with my brolly as I was putting it away after a shower, for example. Still an problem?

You are fine 14-3/6.5 pretty much covers it.

Add a weight to the umbrella to make it a training aid and you have a problem but the restriction on the unusual use of equipment covers strokes not practice swings. Training aids are seperate and can't be used for either.

Ah thanks Duncan, just read that and I agree!

And the moral of this story is to read the actual decisions and not just their headings!
