On Sunday I'm having to give a my regular 4 ball a pass and myself and 3 mates are getting the chance to play this links! The excitement levels are through the roof. It will be my first links experience, in fact all ours 1sts! I feel like a child at Christmas. I cannot concentrate in work, and have played some silky strokes in my head for days. If I can manage any of them in real life well even better. My handicap determines that this will not be the case but I don't care, I'm determined it will be one of the days of my (young) golfing life.
What are your experiences of this course and can you give any advice for a super excited and not highly skilled links virgin!?

You'll love it, it's awesome. I hope you get decent weather as well because the views are just stunning. I played there courtesy of GM and Your Golf Travel last year and I would go back in a heartbeat. There are very few if any courses I have played that I would be willing to fork out over £100 to play, but this one I would without thinking about it.

I played it last year and loved it. My memory for golf courses is pretty poor to be honest but I think it's the 5th heading towards the ocean, it was the only place where having stood on the green I wished I'd had a caddie or a better idea of where to aim off the tee as I tried to be smart and cut the corner with a 3 wood. Ended up with a 6. Play it safe to the left and leave yourself a handy shot into the green. If there's a pro tips section on the website then try and print off the wee comments about each hole as I'm sure it will come in handy.

The 5th is a great hole, I drove the corner as I couldn't work out where the fairway was otherwise. I only had a wedge to the green, I think I 3-stabbed!

I walked the course previously and I have to say the 5th looks outstanding! Cannot wait to give it a bash. I am happy to say it cost us £60 not the usual £150sh rate as it the last day of winter rates! CANNOT WAIT! Plenty of balls that day!

Aye I stood on the tee and thought where the hell do I hit this!! OP IMO take your 200-220 yard club and aim left I'm sure there is a white marker stone or something there.

I played it on the last day of the winter rates last year as well - well worth it.

I will be more than happy to update with how many balls I lost and the 150 shots it is likely to take :) Big Nellie? If I Google that is it safe for work Bob! Lol!

Probably safer to just go to the Royal Portrush website ;) because I ain't man enough to do an image search for Big Nellie. God knows what would appear.

Probably a photo of that girl from the bar at Ballyliffin last year

Three of us were in Big Nellie at once... Plenty of room for a dozen more...

Yep, it's definitely her :whoo:

To the OP.

Still haven't got round to playing there, looks stunning and well worth that price. Enjoy and let us know how it goes.

Well took the risk with the Big Nellie search now I am home. I am happy to report i will be avoiding her at all costs! Doesn't mean i wont enter her though! They all need a bit of loving don't they? Obviously after we finish the hole and if there is no one pressuring behind us. Menacing site though! Hoping it stays dry but for some strange reason would welcome a bit of wind just to get the experience.

IMHO.... on first playing of all new and BIG links course it is so important to game and enjoyment to try to be sensible and conservative off tee and think course management, course management and course management...

play within yourself - sure you'll want to cut corner of 5th and hit that low punch 4I into wind on Calamity... but, they can be bloody sole destroying places, scratching around looking for you ball, hacking amongst the dunes... scar you for life type experiences...especially if it is windy... no hiding, no shelter, leave you battered and bruised but better for it ;)

It will if the wind blows, it might need more than a driver if the wind blows :D

Thats bang on. keishdy it doesn't matter what club you hit on links, just keep it on short stuff between dunes. And on calamity hit whatever it takes to get it over to the green.... Or putt it round path tee to green... :)
