Royal Liverpool to host 2014 Open

This time I'm going. The In-laws only live down the road. Didn't go in 2006 although I was up there - it was just too damn hot!!

Liverpool is one of the easier Open locations for me to get to, so I'm very happy it's returning there soon.

Excellent news, 2006 was the first time I watched an Open from start to finish (well, every minute of the BBC's coverage) as it was the year I took up golf.

Loved every minute watching it, might take a trip over the pennines to watch it and take the young un.

Great news, couldn't go last time as I was away, will probably make a week of it this time, and might be able to find the ball my son kicked over the fence there from the beach last week !

Hoylake looks like a decent track but The Open should be back at Turnberry in 2014 imo, arguably the best course in the UK and should be on the rota every 5 years like St Andrews. Criminal Turnberry has had only 4 Opens
Why not Royal Portrush? - is it too political to go over there?
Sandwich and Lytham next 2 years, so England in 2011,12 and 14, 3 of the next 4 years - just not right! :D
It's oor game, bring it hame! ;)

I would like to see it at RCD really, but I guess there aren't enough hotels in the area (the one that is there is good though). Ditto probably for Portrush. The scousers ate least aren't short of hotels and night life. Or hub caps.

Yes I would love to see it back at Portrush but they dont have the infastructure to host the Open whatever that means,

With Birkdale and Royal Liverpool back on the rota, there seems to have been a move back to English courses, they should just set it up as a list so every 10 years or so each course hosts it so everyone knows where they are. I know it is supposed to be like that but it should be set in stone and St Andrews doesn't need to be every 5 yrs

To me it does not matter what course the open is on its the best championship with the best crowds no matter the course its held on as they are all good/excellent in their own way IMO.

Agree with you on Portrush its a pity as its such a great course maybe there scared the pro's would spend all there time in Kelly's the biggest nite club in Ireland. :).
I don't agree with you on the St Andrews part its the home of golf and should be recognised as that and have its part to play every 5 years , imo Royal Troon and Turnberry and Carnoustie (no mention of them) are better than Lytham and Sandwich.

It is kind of nice to have the open at Sandwich though. Gives some of us southerners a chance to see an open, without having to venture too far north on an expedition (and Turnbury is very much an expedition from here).

Birdieman

Agreed Turnberry is a great track but it's quite hard to get to (even if you live in Scotland and even with the recent road improvements which were the main reason it didn’t feature for 15 years) that attendance numbers are always among the lowest on the rota.

In turn that obviously means the revenue the R&A get from the event which they then use to then distribute into the game is significantly reduced. Not an ideal scenario to have occurring on a 5-year cycle.

There's also the issue of whether a commercial business such as Turnberry would want the disruption and loss of revenue associated with an Open every 5 years

Ref Portrush - I don’t think there's any political agenda but more the fact that logistically it's even less suited to hosting a modern Open than Turnberry. The nearest international airport is over and hour away on a clear run) and nearby roads aren’t exactly traffic friendly). It’s an ideal venue for senior Open's and a Walker Cup perhaps but not an Open.

Personally I can't see the rota being added to in the foreseeable future. I'm also not sure that St Andrews should continue to host the Open every 5 years, as the course is probably the weakest test on the rota. Controversial view I know!

I was on holiday no too far from Turnberry whilst the Open was on last summer. I had thought of going up to spend either the Thursday or Friday on the course watching the worlds best. However, staying next to us were three guys who were working at the Open, their horror stories of the traffic chaos between Stranraer and Turnberry on the practice days put me off altogether. A journey of only 35 miles was taking almost three times the normal time.

Great course, wrong location for easy access I'm afraid.

yEAH!!!! you dont get many events in the south do you? shame on you, visit the glorious north!...or better still stay in the south and watch golf at the London Club/Wentworth etc

The roads aren't great to Turnberry, but to be fair to the organisers they did a great job on public transport last year. I stayed in Edinburgh, can't remember where we got the train to but there were buses layed on for the 10 minute drive from the station. I know it's not ideal having smaller crowds, but from a selfish point of view it made watching and getting about the course a lot easier.

Sandwich is not the best imho, but I suppose we've got to throw the odd bone to the southerners to keep them interested ;)

Doesn't St Andrews command the highest crowds when it is held there? Seems perfect financial sense to me to hold it at the home of golf every 5 years and besides it is my favourite place on earth so of course they should!!

Royal Liverpool didn't fare that great attendance wise I think and gets very mixed reviews as a golf course.

what's the criteria to be considered as an Open course?
accessibility (is that why Celtic Manor isn't there?) and the ability to get big galleries in presumably - but what else.

The Open should be held in and around London. Superb transport links, friendly locals ( :D), low crime ( :D) and great courses.......

Plus, the foreign touring pros can understand us....... :o

Oh, and I can go and watch....... :D
