Not really a review, so will just post it in The Lounge.

Well. What a day. Weather couldn't have been better, bright sunshine with a gentle breeze.

We rolled into the car park about 8.30 to give us time to soak up the atmosphere before our 10.10 tee. Bacon roll and a brew later we wandered out the front. Totally different perspective looking out towards the stands from here. Meandered into the changing rooms and had a chat with the guy who's been running them all week. I got Ross Fisher's locker.

Onto the putting green. Very fast compared to my home course, very true. Not a single bobble.

After what seemed like 10mins we were being called over to the 1st tee, scorecard and players stroke saver (lots and lots of info on those!). Photo taken right next to the sign and then we were off. The pins were all in Sunday's positions, but we were off the yellow tees. A few holes, these were the same as the championship ones.

1st drive, well 3w, and I was shaking like a s******g dog. Hit it lovely, slightly down the right but nice ball flight.... 2 bounces, straight into the bunker. The 1st of several visited throughout the day.

The course was immaculate, as you'd expect. The par 3's were pretty much on the championship tee's and I managed to hit them in level par, with a lovely 10 foot putt birdie on 15!

The majority of the par 4's are just long. Both those and the par 5's all appear to have tight driving lines, even if there's actually quite a large area to go at.

Then there's the 18th. It's the first time I've ever had the chance to play into such an arena and you can imagine how intimidating it must been when it's full.

Just a wonderful day. Probably the best golfing experience I've ever had. Simply amazing!

I played it in 2003 (followed by Carnoustie, St Andrews, Craigielaw and Birkdale in the same extended weekend) using the 'members' course (the 18th was the 1st and 17/18 were slightly 'dull' finishing holes).

Really quite a delicate/feminine course, but there was little wind and the outstanding feature was the bunkers - both style and positioning! Happy to see more Drivers in use this Open!

Are you sure the championship third was not the regular first? It was when we played.

Freebie, all complementary thanks to Mastercard. Won it in a Q&A session with GMac on Thurs.

Very good , we was going to play it in may but they wanted over 100 notes plus we had to play of mats so we played hillside , better course i am told ......................EYG

Must admit, prefer Hillside (still my number 1 course), but it'll never have the grandstands out. The Hoylake run from (on championship layout) from the 9th through to and including the 15th is very nice though, though the dunes.

There are a few better courses in the area. It was in great condition when we played (in February) and the history on show inside the club house is amazing but the course (whilst decent) wasn't in the same League as Birkdale, Formby etc. Wallasey up the road is a great course and the better of the two IMO.

Must be great playing it set up for the Open though with the grandstands still set up etc. I played Conwy a couple of years ago a few days before the Wales Senior Open and they had the stands set up for that. Even that was great so an Open venue must be great.

Pretty certain! I was referring to the Open's 18th as the Member's 1st - a dogleg around the (OB) practice ground. Memorable because my drive was absolutely on the end of the dogleg and dead centre of the fairway! It went somewhat downhill from there, but most enjoyable! Member's 18th was a long way away from the clubhouse - and a rather dull Strokeplay hole. They may, of course , have made further changes since I played it - it was over 10 years ago!

There may be better courses around but I think that's missing the point.....to play the day after with the stands up, same pins, must have been brilliant. Sounds like an absolutely fantastic day. One of the best prizes I've seen and all I can really say is ... you lucky, lucky ******d!!!

It really was just one of those "am I really doing this?" days. Plus, it was the wife who won it!
