OK It seems that opinion is pretty divided about whether we should have an annual shield for the RA day. All I want is a simple Yes or No as I think it has been debated on my other thread. I'll leave it until Wednesday and go with the majority decision

Homer,

You're running an outing for the guys in your locality.

Don't worry what others around the country think. They can and no-doubt will run their events the way they want. Go with your gut feeling for the guys you have attending. You seem to know most of them from other games and meets. Ask them what they want to do, don't let the whole forum take away from your local golf day. If it's successful it will probably become a season starter in the West of London area.

Whatever happens, have a great day.

Yes but there would only be one problem and that would be the trust if one person won and took it home or so on then didnt bring it back. But good luck.

Connor

Connor why would somebody not want to return it don't forget the game(golf) itself is about trust

Homer,

even though I don't have a chance of winning it , I still think we should play for one and also lets make it a annual comp.

Thanks for organising all this.

Midnight...

It assumes the winner will be available to defend it, or is willing to travel to return the trophy, or maybe is still active on the forum the following year. In theory it will be fun on the day, interesting to see if it comes back next year.

Especially if it is gracing my mantlepiece.

Definatly YES, and lets make it one of the GM Majors, everyone will have so much fun that they will want to return next year and someone (not me) will bring the trophy to defend.

vig, I can't agree that the 2nd day at Goswick was in any way an anti-climax, though next time I shall do better - so, Andy be warned.

Location only really becomes an issue for a one-day event, so it is inevitable that some meets will become regional, The War of the Roses is one (and presumably has a chance of being an annual?) and this is essentially what RA is. It doesn't preclude anyone from out-of-area meeting up as AliB proves. And if England-Scotland - The Return is held in Scotland I will do my damndest to be there.

Only issue with trophies is whether they should be small keepers or 'large' and returnable. Not having won any but my feeling is that the latter really only work if the previous winner can return to defend. However, if you care to make one available for me . . .

Surely in the case where someone can not return and defend their title in a subsequent year they could post the trophy, well packaged of course, back to Homer for the next years event.

I think that everybody who is attending the day is well known to everybody else...I don't think anyone that is going would risk the wrath of people that they have come to know just to keep a trophy.
Maybe have a limit on things....the only persons eligible to win the trophy has to have been a member of the site for six months or so?

eagle, I just meant that there is more 'bite' to a comp if the defending champion is there.

smiffy, no way - either everybody competes or it's pointless.

Homer
I have said 'yes' - golf is competetive - even on a fun day people like to have a win and something to remember it by. And this is 'your show'. Go with your own feeling.
(BTW asked for some timings on previous thread which I think you missed - I think you said tee-off from 10 - I'm assuming we should aim to get there 8.30 - 9?)

Cheers

AliB

In the end its a Society day isn't it..

You always have prizes at these. As long as the prize isn't too grand it;s a good idea.

Not saying that there's no point in playing if you can't win something but having something to go for keeps it interesting. There's going to be long drive prizes etc etc so why not.
This can be the SE meet. There can be a Midlands one, a NE one, a NW one and maybe 2 in Jockland. Have prizes at all.

I don't mind either way Homer. I'm just looking for a good day, where I can put faces to names, have a bit of a laugh, and hopefully play half decent golf. But as Ali said it's your show, go with YOUR gut feeling, and I'm sure it will be a great day.

mansell, and others,

To be fair, this was always billed as a London/South East event.

If you're looking for something in your area why not start the ball rolling yourself ?

In MY opinion what we need is a number of events which hopefully will be annual occurences which can then be held at the same time and place each year. This would give everyone a definitive venue in order to make travel plans and plenty of time to book time off.

This meet was always going to be for players in the south although we also have players from the West Country too. If other areas want to have a spring, summer or whatever they want to call it meet elsewhere fill your boots.

The idea I thinks was to get as many forum meets going as possible. If it all takes off as Mike envisaged, we plan to do a report in the mag each month from around the country. What we would also do if these events became regular calender fixtures is maybe publish a diary for the 2010 season outlining all of these sort of days in the various locations
