Anyone who has read my prior posts Harping on about what a quality player Rory McIlroy is turning into will no doubt know how pleased I am to see him do so well at the weekend.

His finish in South Africa puts him in the top 40 rankings and books his place at Augusta!!!

If I could have been playing in the Masters at 19 years old - what an achievment!!!

It is a great achievement and I'm sure he will play there for many years to come. I am a tad concerned that his cavalier attitude may not be best suited to Augusta as history has shown it is a course that needs to be learnt. I also think he needs to get the winner monkey off his shoulder to move on a stage as the media will continue to focus on his inability to close a tournament which will cause its on problems.

However that said I think the future is pretty rosy for Mr McIlroy and that 2009 could be a breakthrough year.

He is so talented it would be wrong for him not to be at the masters. I reckon he is good for one fluke round as well, where he looks promising, but ultimately he won't be anywhere near winning come April.

I would think he is going to be a serious contender for the Open this year - can't remember where it is this year though. I think his game and experience have been built up on links style courses and he's used to the putting surfaces there.

Augusta on the other hand - I dont think he'll have a problem with the course itself but I don't know if he has the short game just yet to feature there. However his putting stats are vastly improved for the 2009 European Tour season (even though were not there yet) over his 2008 season stats.

I think that once he gets the monkey off his back which I believe he will do sooner, rather than later, that we will see the serious level of talent that he has. We've seem glimpses of it so far but I think he is making huges strides as a player in a relatively short period of time.

Anyone can have a patch of excellence, even I did some yrs ago where I was parring courses left right and centre. As a pro, he is currently brilliant but lets see if he still is in a year or so, I would like to think he will be, but golf history shows very few that can sustain or improve their golf over years and years and be a title contender on most occasions they turn up. I would wish him to be one of those golfers but he isnt yet!
