A quote from Rickie Fowler's press conference:

RF: Being confident is I guess just staying humble, in a way quiet and collected. Cocky may be when you start to throw out predictions or I want to play this guy or feel like I could beat him, or I love my chances.

On that basis, what do we make of Rory McIlroy's comments about playing Tiger Woods? Cocky or confident?

I think it shows confidence to want to play against Tiger, although i do think the media took what he said out of context as to me he was just saying yeah i will take him not a problem.

I went back and read what he said and I had to go for cocky. I really like Rory and I dont mind that he made a cocky comment though, its a bit of gamesmanship and why the hell not.

I'd play 'em all (at the same time if necessary) with one hand tied behind my back!

(a victory might not be certain though)

If you can be quietly confident then by definition you can also be LOUDLY confident, without being 'cocky'.

Both cocky and confident, and good on him!

He is one of the best players in the world so is entitled to be cocky no matter who he is playing. And given Tiger's form over the last couple of months then he has even more right to be cocky about kicking his butt!

Personally I hope the captains 'arrange' for them to play each other in the singles, like they did all those years ago with Nicklaus and Brian Barnes

I think he means at this moment in time its probably the best time to play Tiger,But imo a wounded Tiger is a dangerous one.Rory maybe confident in his own playing ability and should probably concentrate on that more than spouting off he would like to take Tiger on.Actions speak louder than words so lets see how many points he produces first.I do like a bit of cockiness though and he certainly has the game to back it up.

There's nothing wrong in saying you want to play someone. If your not confident in beating someone then you never will. Being realistic they're both top golfers and are capable of beating eachother so you have to be confident.

Pre requisite of any top golfer is a bit of "cockiness" surely?

Bit naive to say it in a press conf perhaps, just gave a little crack for the gossips to delve into.

I just wish Rory would pick a decent hairstlye!!!

Instead of this one do you mean?....

Confident is when you say positive things and give the impression you think you will win. Cocky is when that confidence means you say things that "get under the skin" of the opposition and wind them up. This clearly did and could work against him. Overall though who knows, it's all on the day but I wouldn't bet against Tiger having a good tournament.

what did Rory say???

and did he round it off with a crack about tiger's new hunting ground being cardiff on a saturday night?

I went back and read what he said and I had to go for cocky. I really like Rory and I dont mind that he made a cocky comment though, its a bit of gamesmanship and why the hell not.

Read/said??

How can you be certain that you are reading what he said?

You are reading a reporters 'offering' on what was said and indeed the reporter was possibly looking for this response!

The Americans post the offering on their changing room wall and then there is no requirement for a team talk, with Rory the number one enemy!

I voted confident. Cocky - nah, it's more the exuberance of youth. And as others have said, "He has the game to back it up".

Golfmmad.
