Forget about duty. It is all about the VAT. You will be charged 20% VAT on the cost of goods and shipping. If sent USPS, shipping is usually in the $40-50 range and UK clearance takes a week. UPS/FedEx is usually a bit more expensive but much faster. I ordered from a U.S. retailer on a Monday afternoon and the UPS man knocked on my door on Wednesday morning.

Everytime I get a US delivery, its always the same UPS guy that comes and delivers. To conteract his smugness, I pay him in as many pennies as possible. Last two deliveries, he's never been as friendly.

I have a mate that lives in Vegas. If I was to order stuff and get it sent to his house then get him to ship to me as used/items or a gift....where would that leave me?

He would need to declare a value on the shipping form. He can state gift or a nominal amount and you then rely on customs not checking and questioning the truth of it. Chances are you will get away with it but there is obviously a risk involved. Customs can't check every item of this type but if they do they are not stupid and they know that people try to get around duty and vat etc.

Gift doesn't usually work, and even the muppets at Parcelfarce in Coventry recognise golf club shaped packages and know people don't spend $50 to ship something worth less than $50.

The same muppets once received a headcover I ordered from Japan, which cost 3500 Japanese yen (about £20 or so) and misread it, despite all the Japanese writing and the Tokyo address on it, as $3500 and charged me over £400 in charges. When I eventually got through to their almost perpetually engaged phone, they suggested I paid it and disputed it later. I declined, whilst briefly considering a counter suggestion which would have involved them visiting Casualty to retrieve the parcel.

I therefore always go for UPS/FedEx for the speed if I can, and I pay them in plastic. I don't do USPS/Parcelfarce unless I am in no hurry at all.

Edwin Watts does very good value UPS shipping, around $35 for a club and is also pretty fast. So does Callaway Pre-owned.

I bought a camera lens from a Hong Kong dealer, paid in dollars what I would've paid in sterling, so saved a bundle, lens arrived and was classed as a gift, no duty, vat or anything to pay.

Similar circumstances on another lens, this it was sent as a repair, again no duty or anything to pay.

I know Hong Kong and the USA are in different parts of the world, but as per a post above querying whether or not he could get away with have an item declared as a gift, I did.

I may have got lucky, it's a chance you take, you may get away with it, you may have to pay.

Forget it, I've been very interested in a Bombtech Grenade drive and 5 wood for a while and with shipping and import duties the 5 wood was over $450 which is madness for a 5 wood

I used to use these about 10 years ago, mainly to buy stuff cheap and resell/auction online until customs noticed the amount that was being ordered and started to charge the VAT, which reduced any profits to nearly nothing. They was always very reliable and helpful in answering any queries.
