ive got a terrible problem of a reoccurring “over the top swing plane”.

its completely sucking my enjoy from the game.

last weekend I was having a nice full shoulder turn and getting that ball from the inside to out no problem. hitting slight draws/slight fades average Straight! result.

but last night I was out and I hit a slice on the 1st the 4th the 7th and just walked off, didn’t even finish 9holes I was sooo mentally perplexed by the slice.

now I did have good drives on the 3rd and 5th, but it was only a practice round and continuing with my bad habit wasn’t going to help So….

im going to the range at lunch today to hit some balls and I would like you guys to try suggesting some drills.

Thanks in advice to you golfing gurus.

Phil

Theres a number of possibilities, but in my experience, all my swing faults start at the set up. If I get that part right, thats 85% of it for me.

So, check your alignment, feet, hips and shoulders. You should not be aligned to the right in any way. Also check your grip to ensure that it is neutral. Then, as you swing down, make a concious effort to start the ball to the right of your target. What would help is when the club shaft is horizontal on the downswing, it points to the right of the target.

Finally, after getting that bit right, you may have to feel a better release of the club head to bring the ball back from the right (draw it).

It sounds to me that you are (probably subconciously) worried about losing the ball right, hence the over the opt move, but then you think hold on, if I reslease the club from this position its gonna go well left, so you will play an OTT shot with no hand action.

I think Bob is refering to sticking a headcover under your right arm pit. If you come OTT it will fall to the ground.

Hope that this helps.

Hi Phil,

Not a pro here but a sufferer of the casting/over the top move.

I still can do it, its because we are off plane and our body is trying to get us back on plane. If you get someone to video you it will shock you to watch it. ITS UGLY!!!

Anyhow, I find that if I start doing it I shorten my swing a little and feel my right elbow in my ribs through the swing, much like the head cover drill. It makes you more compact.

The real answer would be to be on plane though, then you would not have to cast.

When you club is at address think of a line that goes all the way through the club and through you. At the top of your swing you need to be on that line. The line will be a little different for each club obviously.

havent heard the headcover drill no.

thanks for all the advice i will try the headcover under the left armpit and see how that goes.

any more advice appreciated.

I wouldn't advise the under the armpit.
I meant this

couldnt agree more, the arms will move away from the body on a full swing so restricting that will give you more problems and a restricted swing, headcover is a very effective and simple drill.

ah i tried the headcover under the armpit drill as i had already left for lunch when bob clarified his suggestion.

whoops, my bad.

anyhow id didnt help, i could swing just normal and the headcover wouldnt drop.

so that being the case and me still hitting a fade border line slice ill have to try ingraining the in to out path using the video that bob stars in up above.

i dont want a draw or any extra roll, id just like to overcome those bad drives that hurt me mentally and leave me an unlikely second shot at a green that i should be able to reach easily in two shots.

thanks for the video Bob, and ill post up again with my progress/woes.

That drill will work, but you are going to want to hurt bob after a little while!!! :D

Phil,

Just had a lesson there with the exact same problem.

Picture yourself throwing a beachball, get your shoulders and hits turning both on the back swing and the follow through.

Dont be tempted to 'hit' the ball, let the turn do the work, and let your hands get in the way.

Pro said get a towel or a headcover underneath your left arm and keep it under there, that should keep your arms 'attached' to your body an stop the over the top movement.

It took me 3 years to figure out then when I try to 'hit' the ball it all goes wrong for me. When I focus on swinging the club on a nice smooth path without trying to hurt / kill / maim / smash the ball it goes straighter and quite often further.

Still trying to make sure I do that every single time, but it's getting there slowly!
