Playing an interclub tie today, so a two ball, got stuck behind a slow fourball. At the fourth hole they let the two ball directly in front of us through. I thought, slow play but decent etiquette at least so we'll soon be through as well.....

They didn't speed up, they lost a hole on the four ahead of them who had lost most of the course on that twoball, who they had also let through.

We literally waited to play every tee shot and every approach shot until I won the tie on the sixteenth. I wasn't happy.

Anyone got a theory why people would act in that manner?

BTW I noticed the other two ball holing out on 18 while we were still on 14.....

I still cant get my head around people that post about slow play but never try
to do anything about it.
Ask,simply be polite and ask, whats the worst that can happen.

As I said, I was playing a tie, I considered approaching them but decided I didn't want to risk any aggro and neither did I think it fair to put my opponent into such a situation. Had it been a bounce game, I would have had a word.

Does anyone here think that once you've let one group through you've "done enough" and can forget about it for the rest of the round?

Feel a lot of the time people just have blinkers on and have no idea what is goin on behind them! However if I was in the 4 ball in front of you it would put me on edge and probally ruined my game! So I would of made an effort to let you through :)

Ok so you were playing a tie.
So did you want to go through or not.
If you did ask,if you didn't I cant see why you posted.

Well, there, I'm afraid, is probably your answer.....
They obviously thought you had no right to be played through, what with being Girlies.....
Looks like you got stuck behind a bunch of Muppets...

Ok then, sorry for posting, must've thought it was a forum or something.

It is but I don't understand.
Your having a moan but wasn't willing to do anything about it.
Maybe they didn't realise you were there, maybe they did.
But if you don't ask you don't get.
If as you said you were playing a tie,did you want to go through or not?

Did you even read my reply to you?

I'd try to explain but I'd just be typing the same thing again.

Seems clear to me
the fact that they let other 2 balls through means that they are fully aware of what was going on around them. and one can only assume that they didnt want to disgrace their manhood by letting a couple of ladies through.

It shouldnt happen, simples

unfortunately there are troglodytes amongst us

In fairness, Phil, maybe the two guys asked......

Because they were idiots,that's why.
I'm sorry but you shouldn't have to ask to play through. I'd find it quite rude if someone asked if they could play through tbh. Although it would never happen.

I thought that as well, however, without knowing all the facts I'd bet the Masters win it was because you were 2 women, 4 ball was 4 blokes wasnt it?

I have known (note the past tense) a few 'men' that wont let a woman through no matter what, their attitude is one of the main reasons golf clubs are what they are:angry:

"But if you don't ask you don't get." it is, on the surface, easy to say but not always practical...

Perhaps some one will explain how, if the group in front is halfway up the fairway, it is possible to have a conversation without shouting which, of course, will almost inevitably come over as rude.

It is polite to wait until being asked to play thro. so I can understand the OP's frustration.

Personally I always let ladies play through, as generally they are in a rush to get round quickly as they need to rush home to put the tea on for their hubbies

I think you were just too polite and, maybe in this instance, you did need to ask to play through. Losing 3 or 4 holes seems excessive.

There certainly are some courses where speaking with the group in front is a little problematic but in my experience they are few and far between. You can usually have a conversation when they're on the tee after playing your approach - if you're quick!

FD - As you say it did need a word with your FC/opponent before approaching TGIF (the group in front) but if you're not comfortable with that then...wait. :D

Anyway, you won so put it behind you!

Should make no differance if it were ladies , seniors, juniors, it's just ignorance and really bad etiquette made even worse as they let players through before.

It's all very well saying you should ask but many don't like to and shouldn't have to, for example I recently played a course in Edingburgh and on a very quite day I was playing on my own and got stuck behind a 4 ball (they were members) on the 5th tee I watched them tee off fully expecting to be asked to play through they never even acknowledged me.

As I was a visitor I felt a little awkward asking to play through ,but after giving it some thought later in the day I did regret not asking to play through and if it happened again I think I might have a different approach .
