Talking to my regular playing partner in work today and he was telling me about a incident that happened in comp that he played in at the weekend with two friends. They were playing a par 5 when one of the lads hooked it into the gorse, upon finding his ball and taking his second shot he then somehow managed to mis hit it which in turn buried itself even deeper making it unplayable.
Now, in doing this he then went on to pick his ball up and moved back two club lengths and declared that he was playing his third shot, much to the amazement of his playing partners. They explained to him that they thought it was a penalty and he should be playing his fourth shot and after much discussion he reluctantly took them at their word. Were they right on calling the penalty.

or looking at it another way, the 2-club lengths he took cost him a stroke - hardly a penalty :)

surely he didn't expect to be able to move his ball to a more favorable position at no cost?

he was trying it on maybe his first shot at the bush was a practice attempt to try and see if he could get out, failed so took a drop?
no doubt about 4th it was.

I thought that if you've attempted to play the ball you can't then call it unplayable? Prob well off the mark here.

You can declare it unplayable anywhere (outside a hazard) you like.
In his case if he had hit it from tee to bush, then tried to hit it out and failed, he can't use the return to tee option as it's no longer the point where he played previous shot. The previous shot was played (unsuccessfully) from the bush

I played with someone recently who putted from off the green, hit the flag and the ball stopped an inch away from the cup. At which point he said if the flag wasn't in the ball would have dropped so he is having the birdie.....

Yeah, sometimes before I hit my tee shot I just know I'm going to play a hole well, so will just mark a Par while on the tee :D

Hahahahahahaha!

Really?????

Does he just throw the ball back onto the fairway/green if he gets a bad bounce or takes a wrong club?

Indeed, when we finish a hole and I ask him how he scored it can often be 2 or 3 shots less that I think it was..

3 if you are tiger

4 if you are a regular joe

5 if you are a young Chinese teenager

DQ if you are Sergio..

Thanks I stand corrected as wasn't really that sure. Strange things you pick up on the way round!

Last week, On a P5, I hit the green in 2. I swear the ball came to rest where the hole was the previous week. So I say I eagled it.

Would be a much better result than the 4 putt that followed eventually...:one:

I think the key bit here is the the 2cl, and other options, now relate to the 2nd shot not the first ie there are consequences to the one that goes wrong, even if it's an air shot!
