My mate came to visit today to play a round at my club, he's been playing golf for a few years but very occasionally, perhaps 3 rounds a year with a few range sessions here and there.

Anyway we're playing off the whites today and he only went got a hole in one on our 168 yard par 3 3rd!

Sitting around enjoying a beer afterwards it suddenly dawned on me, so I asked and he confirmed I was right. He's never broken a 100 but now has a hole in one to his name. Surely there can't be too many of those around!

its not really a 'ridiculous' stat, just a stat. a hole in one could happen to anyone that can hold a club relatively straight, as im sure most on here could testify (that have had a hole in one :D)

I've never got one myself but I have witnessed 3 now. all three from 20 plus cappers with 2 from total duffs and one from a good shot.
The best was from a guy who couldn't play off a full ladies handicap but goes out and enjoys himself. He hit a hybrid to our 100 yard par 3 but topped it just past the rough and it ran all the way into the hole. The best thing was as he took the ball from the hole with his hands shaking he said " that's my FIRST hole in one!" Gotta love the confidence of the guy to one day get another one!!!!

We had a chap come to visit the club yesterday as a prospective new member. He was playing a complimentary round and knocked a hole in one on the second....... if that doesn't prompt him to join, nothing will.....

Oh, and I've never had one either.....

Pulling out a hybrid for a 100 yard hole doesn't exactly spell confidence, but fair play to him :)

My dads been playing for 30 odd years and never had one and the worst his handicap has been is 10. My brother has been playing for 20 odd years since he was a teenager and plays off 1 and he's never had one.

I took up golf in January 2011 after years of football and Martial arts and got a hole in one last year at my old course with the scabbiest 6 iron that got no higher than waist height. I think the only stat relevant to hole in ones is that it doesn't matter how good you are its how lucky you get.

Amazes me that people compare a 147 in snooker (probably only do it about this time of year really) to a hole in one! As the OP proves a hacker can score a hole in one but I've never heard a story from a 2 twice a year snooker player lucking his way to a 147! (I've never had either and I'm far less likely to ever score a 147)

I think the similarity would be a twice a year man shooting level par or under :)

I've had a 141.

A red, a broon, and another red :D

What are the odds on a hole in one compared to a 147 - a 147 is a different kettle of fish in my book, you have more potential not to make it because you have to do more. Some stats whizz will pop on with the permutation equation to prove it.
I have had 3 hole in ones and a 230 yard eagle but the was a while ago now :(

My best mate claims (and I believe him) to have had a birdie on every course he has ever played. Is that unusual? Don't know. Certainly not the case for me.

Lets face it a hole in one is 99% luck, 1% skill.
Depends on your game, some of the shots described sound outrageously flukey, scuffed topped shots going in are lucky. But well struck straight shots played at the pin 99% lucky ? Nah your not giving the player any credit. You don't see it on tour so much because of the pin positions and types of green etc ...
