Rosses Point is a lovely course and a great club steeped in history; currently the club hosts the West of Ireland Amateur Championship. However thanks to a generous (anonymous) benefactor plans are afoot to 'revitalise' the course in the hope of hosting the Irish Open.

The West of Ireland, in particular the golf in Mayo, Sligo and Donegal, is great but often overlooked in favour of Kerry and the Dublin courses so this should hopefully improve its image as well as improve some holes, especially 1-3, which were lacking somewhat.

More info here, here and here. What do you think?

That pic of 17 reminds me an awful lot of one I have of the 14th at Rye which is another Colt course

Any opportunity to bring a classic course up to date should be commended

Rosses is indeed a great course, and not one I remember as needing much toughening up.

I hope Pat Ruddy will avoid the temptation just to lengthen everything and make the greens less receptive. The intention to make it more suitable for the Irish Open worries me a bit though. Doesn't that mean just longer holes, increasing the flat spots on greens to give more flag positions and providing more viewing positions? Many Tour courses are just hideously long, narrow joyless affairs.

Rosses Point isn't one of my favourite courses, the start and finish are too weak in my opinion. The first 2 or 3 holes up and down the hill and the 18th really need to be improved. I thought that the course didn't really come alive until after the first par 3 where you drive down to the lower part of the course. If those 3 or 4 weaker holes can be improved then it has the potential to be an absolute top quality course.

As they intend to keep regular tees as well as championship tees the added length will hopefully not affect mere mortals too much.
As for the greens it seems they intend to lengthen a few, hopefully as mentioned above this does not just mean adding flat spots for pin positions.

Agreed 1-3 are a little boring, the pro even said as much too me when I was paying the green fee. I enjoyed the par 3 4th which is like an upturned bowl. As for the finish I didn't mind it so much.

Yes...Enniscrone is brilliant!! And if you have the time, the drive out to Belmullet to play Carne is also a must.

Carne is great but sadly as it is closer to New York than Dublin it is not really practical for those short on time.

Strandhill (across the bay from Rosses point) is worth an honorable mention as well; it is often overlooked

I think you could be right, the only other people in the B&B we stayed at in Belmullet were americans :D
