Captain's Weekend Texas Scramble yesterday - pretty good prizes. Course in great condition, but rough a nightmare and blowing a hooley. Won by a four ball with aggregate handicap 22 who shot 2 pars, 2 eagles, 14 birdies. 18 under par gross - the winning score without their handicap allowance. Was rather inevitable they'd win I suppose. 2nd place taken by the group with next lowest aggregate handicap.

Low handicappers revenge - banding together to fight back against unfairness they perceive in full k/o handicap allowance being given in club handicap comps and against med-high handicap bandits :)

Nairn Dunbar have a Texas scramble at the end of Aug and they have worked out a formula that keeps the banditry usually found in these competitions at bay. I’m not sure how it works but last year we won and our full handicaps were; 2. 3, 4 and 7 with a combined or 0.2 so no shots, all of us played very well

Our midsummer scramble was played yesterday. The format was 10% of combined handicap, capped to 8.0 maximum. Each team member had to contribute a minimum of three tee shots. Seems pretty fair to me.

Not another comp being won by a Cat 1 player! Something wrong with the system when this keeps happening!

That was precisely our format - not sure about the max 8 though. Unfortunately one of my four couldn't get going off the tee. Shotgun start - and so we reached our 17th (long par 3). Our 18th being a tough tee shot with OOB all down right and nightmare down the left. And what has my buddy been doing all round - high slice. So we said - OK - we are taking your tee shot on the 17th - you don;t want to be playing the 18thj off your tee shot. So he loses his ball off tee 17th :) ...and to the 18th tee - he said he was quite calm - I'm not so sure. He kept it in play.

We enjoyed ourselves but came nowhere (net 62) as I was low handicap and rest of my team (aggregate hcap 63) struggled to cope with the wind and rough. I wasn't that great either - but at one point we played my 'ball' every shot for three holes and the hole prior to these three I'd holed the 12ft birdie putt :)

Good that the lower boys had their day in a fun comp.

They tried this at our course in the last scramble and were winning until the final group, sadly they got pipped by a 13 and 15 handicapper and their respective other halves playing off 25 and 33. They lost by half a shot, the difference boiling down to the 33 handicapper holing from 40 yards at the last lol

Which it has to be said is VERY unlucky as the 33 handicapper would normally be delighted to hit the green from 40 yds never mind hole it. Random. :)

All the scrambles I've played are capped and always won by a low handicap group...fair enough :)

Played a 4BBB yesterday (3/4 handicap) and our playing partners were high handicappers and never ever stopped moaning about how many shots they "lost" compared to us. Funny enough though I didn't hear much complaining when they hit a "5, nett 3, for 3" (more than once)!

Teams are drawn for our texas scramble and are done so deliberately to ensure a mix of handicaps in each team. I'd quite like to play one where we're not struggling to get the requisite number of tee shots from a high handicapper; although that certainly does add another dimension to the round!

Interesting, our club has a different handicapping system for Texas Scrambles and the low handicappers never win.
We do half of the lowest player's handicap plus 10% of the others.
As such if you have a cat1 player in the team your starting figure is much lower. The teams that tend to win are one's with all 15-20 handicappers.
