Hi,

I'm new to the forum and to golf in general. (only been playing for a year)

I bought a cheap set of oversize Mcgregor irons from ebay (under 25 pounds) which I'm quite happy about as they're quite forgiving and I can hit them quite straight.... of the tee that is... of the deck is a different story ...

anyway... the point is the 7 and 5 irons need new shafts and I'm wondering how much would it cost me to reshaft and regrip both irons with cheapish steel shafts and grips? (Apollo regular steel shafts and Lamkin grips....or similar)

Should I buy the shafts and grips myself online and get a pro to fit them? or buy and re fit in-store?

I really don't want to spend too much on this as these are old clubs and if it will cost me upwards of 40pounds even for a cheap reshaft/regrip... I might as well buy another set of irons on ebay....

Thanks

Reshaft and regrip including labour and materials is going to set you back around £40+ from a pro - not really any much cheaper in the long run if you buy the parts yourself and get the pro to do the work. If you can get a set off ebay for less (quite likely) which require no further work, then this would be the cheaper option.

I bought a set of Taylor Made Burner irons off of ebay about a year ago, they cost me £55 for a 3-SW set. They have done me well in my first 18 months as a golfer and now I can see some improvement on my natural game I am looking to invest in a much better/newer iron.

Ebay is definitely the way forward for a starter set. Golfbidder.co.uk is also a good place for good quality second hand equipment. I purchased my driver and putter from there and was very satisfied with them.

Thanks for the replies guys, very honest and extremely helpful.

I will carry on without the 7 and 5 irons for the time being. So far I've played 2 rounds without and as well as making my bag lighter :) it's making me think more on club selection ... although not sure if that a good or bad think at my level....anyway..

and as i have the 6 iron between the missing irons then the gap is not so great and I can do without as this is my first iron set which was bough with the sole purpose to get me playing golf....

In the long run I will invest in a better set of irons but that's when I develop more consistency.

Cheers

Each to their own but the 7 iron (IMHO) is the key club to any golfers game. For the sake of £50 if you are thinking about taking it up its worth the investment.
