"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. / At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them."

Talking to HID About 10 mins ago when we were kids every year we did the remeberance Sunday March. Me with the SJAB which I continued to do up until I was 38 and her when she was in the Coronets jazz band.
I asked her if they practiced specific tunes for the day and she says "no, there trainer was ex grenadier guards so most of the tunes were military" She says " it's a long way to Tipperary was one of her favourites", she mentions listen the Bass drum has just gone boom boom boom, that means there gonna play another tune. long way to Tipperary comes on and she's off.
Shes ironing in the kitchen now whistling, both are of a poor standard.

RIP Frank Whilde buried Monte Cassiono, died Somewhere in Northern Italy 1944

Just back from the local parade, good to meet up with Old Frankie again, Frankie served with the Highland Regiment in WW2, 95 years young and our last WW2 veteran left in our RBL Branch,
He left home in 1940 and didn't come home for 4 1/2 years, served in Africa and then into Italy, he was discharged from the Army in 1945 and both his brother and Father had been killed and he was the only male left in his family.
Absolute inspiration, still lives alone in sheltered accom, but is sadly looking frail and tired, really hope it's not his last parade.
Thanks Frankie, thanks for your service.

Pretty disgusted today. I was in a large local retail outlet at 11.00 this morning. The store announced there would be 2 minutes silence, announced the start and yet probably half a dozen people kept chatting and shuffling through the sale rails in case they missed a bargain. One even started asking the sales assistant, who was stood in respectful silence, for help.

Now this is the point where many would jump to th conclusion that this was another sign of the lack of respect shown by the youth of today but you would be wrong. Every person not observing the silence was at least in their 60s.

Not something that I would normally do but at the end of the silence I felt the need to point out the lack of respect being shown to those who were near me and had not observed the silence as their shopping was clearly more important.

Remembering all those who lost their lives through violence on any day and every day.

Why hijack this thread to score points? Not everybody who died while serving their Country did so through violence.
Any loss of life is sad, but you have 364 other days to post.

Why does it offend you? Why can't a day for remembrance be inclusive?

I've no issue with a 'remembrance day' having many personal meanings
It doesn't, it was the use of the word violence, like I put, not every death is a violent death, it's about remembrance, remembrance for all.

I support today 100%. Some are looking for an angle, some have validity, some not. Objecting to their use of remembrance makes an unecessary issue. If some wish to politicise it, let them, but they're missing the point.

Thanks for the posts, We have no idea what goes on in each others lives, it was evident to me Phil started this thread to recognise Remembrance Sunday, if people don't agree with it fine, that's their business, I took Farneyman's post as a dig against Remembrance Sunday and what it stands for, If I'm wrong I apologise, but instead of an explanation trying to educate me/us we get another smart comment.
I'll not post on this thread again.

No post all you want, I think the debate is healthy. Some may dislike the symbolism as it can be construed as UK establishment. The orgin maybe be rooted in establishment guilt of sending millions to a futile death in 1914-1918 but it's become more than that. I'm happy to remember all who sacrificed their lives to another mans cause.
