Man utd & Arsenal could attract world class players. Both teams appear to av money to spend, but none of their main targets appear interested in either.

They can afford the players, but not their wages! I still think the lures of Manchester are not as glamorous as Madrid, Milan or Barcelona... City threw money at world class players and thy played great football and won a title. They all seem to be moving on now though....
I still hope Utd get Fabregas though...

City av made a few big signings already. Can't see Fabregas goin to utd & 5yr ago utd would av been in the race to sign Bale. When you've got Cavani & Falcou going to Monaco & PSG it says it all.
Can't wait for the Prem to start,my money's on Chelsea.

EPL teams are going to get a BIG fright one day soon when they discover that the EPL isn't the 'best' league in the world any more as their teams don't reach the semis or final of the european comps - and as a result the best players go elsewhere. I'd rather like seeing the smug look wiped off the EPL Chairman Scudamore's face.

What a surprise! Would never have predicted this post from SILH...

Try being a Leicester fan and the only signing you've made is a left back on a free from tranmere!

The EPL has been living in a dream world for a while now and it's just not sustainable. Mercenary players picking up silly wages with no real commitment to the cause. Clubs in more and more debt or billionaire owners. Sad to see arsenal finally giving in and splashing the cash I kind of respected the way the club was ran. Some of the transfer fees paid and touted this season has been shocking, a worldwide recession yet fees keep rising. It's one of the reasons I've drifted away from the game.

Its a fair point IMHO. the premier league is arguably the most entertaining, but as far as quality goes, the top teams in Spain and Germany are better than the top english teams. (currently)

Not just me thinking along these lines - see @Evesdad, @rooter

Is it not true though! Maybe entertaining in itself - but best - maybe not. And when Champions League success continues to evade EPL clubs eventually the owners and sponsors will wonder what they are ploughing their money into - 'Don't walk away Rene'

The EPL is an arrogant bully of an organisation.

EPL clubs have done better than any other country over the past 10 years in reaching the latter stages of the Champions League. The stats are as follows:

England - 3W, 5RU
Spain - 3W, 0RU
Italy - 2W, 1RU
Germany - 1W, 3RU
Portugal - 1W, 0RU
France - 0W, 1RU

I still think Prem clubs will be in the mix in later stages of champions lge,but it looks like Bayern will be the club to beat for a while.

No doubt the EPL is beginning to lose it's sparkle.
There were many televised matches last year played in front of half full stadiums.
Unless they get the crowd 'atmosphere' it makes for dull telly.

Anyone notice that budget team Dundee United defeated the FA cup holders the other night?

Good stats here!!! You cant argue with that. I dont like the players I think they are way over paid and overated but I do do love the game and the drama of the EPL. Its the best and most competitive league in the world by a long way and probably the toughest. Any of about 4-5 teams could win it with the others all making an impression. Yes some of the better players go to Madrid or Barcelona but we know why that it is.... France, Bundesleague, La Liga and Serie A yes have one or two good teams but its not half as exciting or competitive. Most of the top European players who dont chase the money or the climate and can handle the pace will come to England. Shame our national team doesnt make the grade however.....:(

I did - good result - pity Super Saintees got beaten by Morecambe on Saturday - we were resting our players of course :)

Very good historical stats indeed. Hardly surprising the England national team is struggling. Scotland provided England with the perfect warning model with Scotland struggling for the last 15yrs as Celtic and Rangers brought in ever more overseas players to the exclusion of Scots in pursuit of the might Euro.

the exact reason why the national team is failing is the premier league!! pick the top 6 teams, how many english players in their best starting line up? 3-4 at most typically.. than have a look at barcelona, madrid, bayern...

There are large corporates that rely on the Premier for their turnover, customer retention and profits. Sky's only USP is sport, with the EPL being the biggest drawcard. If the EPL starts to suffer then so will Sky and for that reason the EPL will not be allowed to fail. Whether it is the best or not Sky will always push the message that it is.
BT may see a dent in their profits if the EPL starts to lose it's appeal but it's nowhere near their core business.

You could argue that England have pillaged the best Irish, Scottish and Welsh players for over a century.
I suppose in those days the core of the team was still English.

Are you really 15th in the world ?.....wow.
Never mind you still have the 4th best league in the world.
