Considering starting doing my own.

What sort of initial outlay is involved to offset the cost saving ?

Is it really worth the bother and if I go down this route what do I need to buy and how easy is it.

Just buy a roll of tape and some white spirit. REALLY easy to do... I can walk you though it. You dont need anything else.

A workbench and a vice would make it easier but not essential.

Pretty much the point I was trying to make.

I've put grips on before with no bench or vice, but found it a little more tricky.

For someone who is, literally, just starting to do it for themselves, making it as easy as possible would have been my suggestion.

You just need a Stanley knife to cut the old grips off, solvent and tape.
you can buy the stuff in a set from gamola.
ive found doing irons easy enough without a vice so long as your quick at pushing them on, don't stall. Also when the grip is initially pushed right down its stretched so just hold the top in place and pull it back up from the bottom. Then twist to line up.
I've found anything with a graphite shaft a little trickier without a vice due to the shaft flexing when pushing on. Again you've got to slide on without stalling, I've found if you do your left with a half a grip on.

Cost.. I suppose it depends on the price of the grips. Just give it a go with the irons first. It's pretty easy once you've done a few.

I'd disagree, but then I would :D

I re gripped and re shafted my whole set last year, I cant think of a time a bench or vice was needed. Not saying it wouldnt be useful, just no problem if you dont have one.

Have a look on youtube for videos of how to do it, there's loads..... not all of them use a workbench and vice either 😆

I do all my own now. Very easy. Onve you've done a couple you'll get the hamg of it and fly through the rest.

Plenty of vids on youyube as well.

All you need is either a stanley knife to cut the grips off, or an air compressor to blow them off. Grip tape, White spirit and a rag to clean the old tape off once peeled. A container to catch the white spirit in when you pour it from the grip, over the tape on the shaft and a towel on the floor to stop you scratching your clubs.

I just have a cheap workmate bench and that rubber grip thing they sell on ebay for £2.99 and I do all my clubs with no bother

I'd say you definitely need something to hold the club it is much easier

Then it's just tape, grips and white spirit and maybe a pan or old paint roller tray for any drips
