Referendums seem to be a interesting way for people to flip the bird to the political nearsightedness..
1) First Joe Scot decided that we were better together. It is another matter that SNP will raise it head again
2) Now Kiwi decide to stick with the flag (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-35888474)

Now we need Joe Brit to stay with Janet EU...

of course it can throw some interesting ones... Boaty Mcboatface comes to mind.

I'm amazed by the New Zealand vote. Why on earth would they still want our flag on theirs?

Because they are still proud to be part of the commonwealth and still feel pride to be connected to us ?

But they are their own country. We are part of Europe, I am happy with that, but I would not want the EU flag as part of our own. Time for New Zealand to have its own independent identity.

They do have their own independent identity - having the Union Jack in their flag doesn't mean they don't.

We are still part of the commonwealth and linked to them

Have you been there?

They are very proud of their past and even have a Public holiday day every year for the Queen Birthday, in fact they very royalist :) Huge numbers turn out when ever there is a Royal visit.

My conspiracy theory is that the size of the union jack is inversely proportional to the cricketing ability ... Aus & NZ have reduced the size and doing well. India does not use it and are winning.. #JustSaying

Actually I think this is a great idea - all the EU countries should have a wee EU flag superimposed on their own flag. Do you think it should be in one corner or right in the centre?

They seem more British than we are.

No! Just more sensible!

Actually, NZ's 'remoteness' and relatively small population does have several advantages in that regard! They are not all thugs like Steve Williams! The news media is far more even-handed too - imo, an attitude caused by the lower population meaning that they have to 'appeal' to both 'wings' in order to sell sufficient copy to be profitable.

Oh, and they are quite happy to celebrate the contributions of immigrants too - Lydia Ko and Danny Lee for example!

As for the referendum itself...this is another recent referendum that has voted for the status quo, in spite of a vocal minority who pushed for change! And there was an earlier example in Australia too! So it seems to me that there's a lot of inertia that any 'change' lobby has to overcome!

If they were part of a different type Commonwealth where the UK was pushing for them to become more closely integrated in the same way the EU has aspirations; I think they would not be happy to accept the status quo given the opportunity to break out.

PS.

Why do you have a fixation with those silly smilies  .
They are becoming a bit OCD of you now.
