I previously remember being asked to count how many shots I took from inside 150 yards. I am sure that was the distance and the object was to try and reduce that number over a period of time.

Has anyone else ever noted these and was it inside 150 yards ?

What would you expect to score ?

I haven't tried this but like most great ideas, it sounds so simple and effective. I will give this a go as it is becoming more and more evident that 150 yards and in is where I could really see some improvement. I believe I have made some major improvements recently in areas like ball striking and course management that have not been reflected in my scores. Clearly improvements in some areas of the game are more effective than others.
In answer to your question, I guess you would hope for 3 shots per hole (one on to the green and two putts) but in reality I would guess an average 18 handicapper would take at least 4 so maybe 72+ per round? That's a big chunk of your gross score.

For most of us, missing a green from 140 isn't (or shouldn't be) a massive surprise.

For very low handicaps, getting down in less shots from 40-100 is where the score is to be made.

For everyone else, inside 40 is where to concentrate on.

All IMO of course.

Personally, I concentrate most on practicing my chipping because in the event I do miss a green I can live with it if I then get up and down.

As a handicap golfer I fritter away more shots from within 20 feet of the green than I do from 150 yards.

All well and good, but if you improve the accuracy of the <150, then you won't need to chip in the first place! So the logic to counting the total number of shots within 150 still holds - if there's enough room in the memory - as it covers both!

I'd certainly spend more time practicing chipping than 150-100 yard shots though!

I don't disagree, but my point was that, as a handicap golfer, you're still going to miss greens. It would be great to have an all round game (I'm just all round average), but it's about percentages.

I think if you concentrate on your short game the rest tends to take care of itself, not least because there's less pressure to hit greens to begin with. And if you lessen the pressure to be accurate, the odds are you'll actually improve from 150 yards.

I remember something similar came up a year or so ago. Folk were saying how many greens they would hit from 150 out of 10.

Then the average from the pga tour was shown. Unsurprisingly most folk on here thought they were higher than the tour average.

In reality even from 150 most of us are trying to get as close to the green as possible then get up and down

Game Golf records this information as a % and you can choose which distance ie 75-100, inside 100, 100-125, 125-150 etc, you can also view by club, golf course or rounds, all distances are recorded to less than 15yds to the centre of the green. currently over the last 20 rounds mine are showing as 37% are within 15yds, 22% are short, 23% miss left, 13% miss right and 5% are long,
Don't know if good, bad or average, but definitely areas to work on over the next 20 rounds and on the range to see if I can improve.

My pro told me I was practicing all wrong during a lesson. I'd happily stand and batter 200+ balls for 4 hours. He told me that was pointless and I had to dedicate a minimum of 75% of those balls to short game only.

Made a huge difference to my scoring and handicap. Now there is not as much stress or pressure if you do miss a green if your short game is sharp.

I think 150 yards is too far still. You should be concentrating on from within 100 yards. That's where the majority of golfers drop their shots

my pro used to tell me to aim for less than 40 shots from inside 40 yards

What was your handicap then ? That is just over 2 shots per hole.

Alan have you checked out the stuff on strokes gained? Worth a read by the pool!

There's a free spreadsheet you can download and use to record the stats on.

Thanks Fabian, will have a look at this, sounds interesting.

Some interesting answers here.

I am now not convinced that he did say 150 yds, with the benefit of these replies he may have said 100 yards.
Either way, I will be having a look at recording these shots from 100 yds and in during the rest of the winter and see if I can drop the number taken.

i was probably around 10 ish when he was preaching about that, but he liked to apply that rule regardless of handicap.

it's not a world away from what hank haney tends to say in eliminating 3 putts and double chips, or double bunker shots

My Ball striking is very good for the handicap that I play off so from 150 yards is really not my problem. Putting and chipping is where my shots come and if i could do those as good as i could the rest who knows where i could be! But at the moment with just starting a new job and buying a new house in the last 3 months practice has died off. February is my month to kill the short game.

That sounds just like me, only if you exchanged putting for pitching, I averaged just over 32 putts last year, so not too terrible. The pro I use said that if he hadn't seen my swing before and I was coming to him for the first time with a 16 handicap he would be immediately looking at my short game :o

not sure on the 150 yards, for me... more than id like.

from inside 100 its not that bad. we have a young lad at our club who#s off +4 now, he spends hours just going round our 9 hole course. he is awesome from inside 100.

I have to say that I think there is a lot of merit to playing either short 9 hole courses or par three courses to really hone your short game.

I agree. According to GG2 I average 80% inside fifteen feet from 100 yard (all lies). 83% from 75-100 yards and then down to 76% from 50-75%. Apart from the last one I didn't think these were too bad off 12 but if I can get these even better along with good chipping and putting then I should see handicap progression this year
