Bought HID a Packard Bell laptop few weeks back on a cracking deal from Currys was only £310. Its better spec'd than all the Sony, Dells, & HP ones they had in there and guy that sold me it said they one of the best ones they had in stock for some time.

HP Probook (with an intel processor if possible) 100 times out of 100 for me, I have bought quite a lot of laptops in my 17 years of IT and the likes of Dell, Acer etc come and go with quality but HP never disappoint.
Even as higher end second hand one would be better than most £300 laptops out there.
