With the unpredictable - and often wet - weather we get in the UK, I'm currently looking for a waterproof suit, as I'm walking about in wet weather with waterproof trousers that wouldn't be out of place on a council navvy, thanks to my wife's cost-conscious outlook.

Not looking to spend copious amounts of cash, a cheapie suit - £30'ish will do, and brand unimportant; only caveat is that trousers have to be stretchable to fit the more rotund gentleman, lets say a gentleman with a 42" waist, although he's working hard to reduce that. :D

So, what would you suggest?

Ultimately depends on how much rain it need to cope with. If you want protection for showers then I'm sure the cheaper end of the market will be fine. If you will playing in continuous rain then I would definitely recommend more than £30 being spent. You have to wonder if your even going to bother playing if t raining heavy for 4 hours.

I got a complete Proquip suit for £99 a few years ago, lightweight whisper quiet and good enough for a whole round of major rain without letting in a drop.

You can often look out for value deals from the retailers, and if your prepared to wait for the right one then you'll get a great deal.

I'm in East-Central Scotland, so it'll need to handle some rain. I'm a bit of a fair-weather player, so it would predominantly deal with occasionally heavy showers that I might get caught in. When its plootin' down, I tend to watch from the clubhouse, or my front room. :D

If £30 is your limit then you might want to look at Dunlop. I had one of their suits when I started, well made, definitely waterproof in heavy rain. The only drawback (and there will always be one at that price) is that they weren't particularly breathable.

£30 for a decent set of waterproofs not a chance. If you manage to get one for that then as been said you will sweat like hell and probably be just as wet as if you were in the rain without waterproofs on. I would definitely say add a bit more to it and get something like Proquip etc. TK Maxx occasionally have some bargains in such as Sunice which is decent stuff. If not go 2nd hand but be careful for any rips and that the item has been looked after correctly.

When I said £30ish, that was a ball-park figure.. don't mind paying a little extra if its going to be worth the outlay. £70 would probably be the limit I'd go to.

However, what hasn't been answered is whether the suits mentioned will fit my ample girth. Looking at size charts of various makes and prices, to get a fit in the trousers, the consensus I'd need to go 2XL, but then the accompanying jacket would probably drown me. I'm also short-legged, and with 33" inside leg the hems would be ground-trailing.

Similarly, L/XL have better fitting jackets, but the trousers are quoted as being too small and no mention of whether they are adjustable enough to fit, so I was trying to come up with a best-of-both solution at reasonable cost.

I'm a bloody awkward fit, and so I'll probably look to buy trousers and jacket seperately to ensure I get a decent fit.

I think for £30 you will sweat and then get wet!!

If you could stretch that budget a little there are bargains to be had now (as the summer has started )

Look out for end of line ranges, Mizuno do soom good stuff thro DG (other golf stores available of course)

If you use CG discount (as posted above) then you can buy the trousers and the top separate, so you can get different sizing .... Don't even need to be same brand, and maybe even buy at different times to allow you be more a little more extravagant (typical £40 for trousers alone would be good value)

If this is the case id do what in the rough has said. Although paying more your better forking out for waterproofs as theyll last if good quality.

You really do get what you pay for in this instance, its worth investing in a decent set. I bought FJ dryjoys two years ago, played in some horrendous conditions and never even got mildy damp. still going great

May be don't buy golf specific clothes? They are over priced for what they are. May be a golf jacket, as it's more sport specific in the cut, but any out door shop can sell you water proof walking trousers for not much money.
