I'm in the market for new (used) irons, I am currently playing with those listed below, which are great when playing well, but punish me when I'm not, in the last month I have played 8 times scoring between 47 & 27 (today) points.
I have a 92-94mph swing speed with a 7 iron, steep angle of attack and launch the ball very high.
Looking for something that won't balloon into the air, but will be forgiving...
Budget up to £200-£300 for second hand

Cheers for your help!

It's the right time of year to 'invest' in lessons! A much better way o use your money imo!

Though new irons might be required when the coach gets you to slow your swing down to a blur! Unless you are built like a Prop Forward, I'd suggest that the loss of balance caused by swinging that fast is the cause of that huge difference in scores. It's great to have that speed available, but you don't have to use it every time!

Used irons id recommend a set of taylormade r9tps. I had them with px6s in them and the were nice. More forgiving than the previous r7tp model.

Im currently playing x2 hot pro irons. Get them for around 299 new now however they have the flighted shafts which would be no good for you.

Also tried the jpx forged ez irons when i was fitted and they were very forgiving. Not sure if you would find them 2nd hand in your budget though

I'm not too hot on rugby, would 18st and 6ft count as prop forward material?

I am currently having lessons. I'm not swinging out of my skin, it's just how fast it is naturally...

it sounds like you've eaten a prop forward !!!!

in all honesty, Foxy is probably right. Slowing that swing down to 90 or below might mean not needing new irons (those shafts are a bit stiff eh?). Swing as fast as you can whilst still maintaining balance and control.

No, that's Second Row/Flanker material! Props are 18st but shorter! So that flex is probably appropriate! An ex-Scotland A forward - a recent 'convert' to Golf I played with - hit 9 iron 190!

Slowing down might be an idea, but staying balanced is the key! The lessons you are having might also be affecting scores - when you think about the technique and don't let the swing flow. Were the misses in the last round consistent or were they 'everywhere'? Were you trying the 'miracle' recovery shots? Was your putting or short game particularly poor?

There are plenty of rounds that are horrible scores, but there only a couple holes that were played really badly. That's the (frustrating) nature of Golf.

And ask you coach whether new irons would help. He's in the best position to be able to tell - and will probably say 'No'! Or at least park the current ones, as they are certainly not bad ones!

Cheers, I think it is a general not getting it right rather than a few shockers, not hitting enough greens on 120-180yd par threes is where I really see the lack of forgiveness. I have been a bit ill for the last week or two aching etc, and it is now I really feel I could do with something easier. When I'm up for it and finding the middle you really couldn't ask for better sticks! Came home today having decided I need new irons after two poor rounds this week, not knee jerk at all!
I am at Silveremere on Thursday for the Titleist thing, might be an opportunity to ask wether they are the best for me...

Titleist will definitely have a set that's right for you in a custom fit. I was at Callaway in the week and the fitter told me that the average club members driver swing is around 90 mph so your 7 iron is really fast. Try the X2 hot irons they are just being superseded and, with the right shaft, you could pick up a new set around £300

Might be worth looking at shaft choice rather than whole iron change. Something like a C Taper or C Taper Lite would be able to handle your speed but IMO is a bit more forgiving than PX 6.5.

I play PXi 6.5 which although from the same manufacturer and same 'grading' as your normal PX 6.5's play softer and are easier to load without going full bore.

Second hand, Ping I20's or I25's, Bridgestone J40's (would be my choice), TM MC's, Callaway Apex

The PXi shaft the good groundskeeper has recommended are excellent for controlling ball flight
