Been playing for just over 3 years now and from April this year I'll be joining my very first club as a fully fledged member. I'm really looking forward to the year ahead!

I'm leaving the Navy and due to my next job in civvie street being shift based I'll have more free time to play a lot more golf! I'm joining the same club as Forum member foliage finder as he's my only playing partner. I'm also hoping to get a handicap and play in some comps

Sure this subject has been brought up before many times but what were your reasons for taking the plunge and joining a club?

A natural progression after football and tennis. Next is bowls, shuvhalfpenny and die!

Best of luck with your membership, enjoy every round!

Easy. Here in Germany if you want to play golf, joining a club is pretty much the only option, since there are almost no public courses or driving ranges around and you need to be a member of a golf club to be allowed on most courses. The only alternative is to become a member of the VcG (which is the "club of club free golfers" ... I kid you not ... this is Germany, we like everything neatly organized :D). Many clubs also offer country memberships now and there are online-agencies that sell those off to players who will probably never play the golf course they are then officially a member of. But the most common and most practical way is to become a member of a golf club close to you if you want to play.

I joined my first club because 4 of my friends/workmates were already members there. After a few years 3 of us moved on to my present club, and still pay together.:whoo:

when i took up the game its was explained to me that this was the only option to play as often as i could. without it costing a small fortune in greens fee's

When I got back into golf it was inevitable I would join a club. The only decision was which. I could get to half a dozen other clubs just as quick but the one I choose ticked a lot of the boxes, the fact the club has improved every year since justifys my decision.

I got back into golf after years of injury, lack of money and lack of time due to having a family to support. I joined a club just 3 miles away so I could play when
I wanted and if it tipped down with rain I could go home after a few holes without thinking I had wasted my green fee. Also I wanted to get a handicap and play in comps.

I'd been playing a few years; was getting quite good, and fancied playing somewhere better than my local municipal - and a few mates were members of clubs - so I joined one. My local (less than a mile from home) members club had a 7yr waiting list and as I got a good rate for associate membership which suited me as a student, I joined East Ren. Didn't try out any courses beforehand - just joined the nearest club that would have me -it was only a few miles away anyway.

I was forced to by my father. He met the Pro at Reading Golf Club at a party, and after a few drinks agreed for the family to have lessons. I have never forgiven him for the years of misery I have subsequently suffered.

Meanwhile, in a red dwarf style "alternate universe"..........:D

Best thing you'll do Grogger - joining a club - all things golf follow from there.

Having retired in my fifties and the knees not being what they used to be I came to the conclusion that sports I had played previously (including tennis, skiing, football and softball) were no longer an option and, having played golf on-and-off for many years, decided to join a club.

A little on-line research showed many of the clubs locally to have very little discernible difference so I drove down to the nearest one (0.6 miles) went out with the secretary for a round and fell in love with the course after about 6 holes. I joined on the Friday of the same week, hooked up with the Tuesday/Thursday/Sunday roll-up and never looked back (that was in November 2014). Benefits include playing up to 7 times a week, new bunch of friends, somewhere to go for a drink & watch sky sports, handicap to work on, competitions to play in and a locker!

Happy days (when it's not raining).
