Ive been watching some chipping videos trying to get some tips.
Its funny how many of these videos are off picture perfect pristine golf courses (usually in a lovely hot climate).
Chip it inside 3 feet blah blah nonsense. In the real world at our local courses. I would say 30-50% are off tight muddy bear lies with flaky trampled grass and minimal consistent conditions.
Fine popping it up off of a luxurious fairway is probably 200 times easier. I think this is where a lot of amateur golfers really struggle when they see the ease of the pro's chipping videos.
Then you get the fluffy long grass around the greens in hotter climates with different types of grass. Which is totally different to the UK and you watch the lob type shots that are required to play in this fluff. You only really need this shot if you are short sided. And generally a short sided UK lob shot is again off the mud. Meaning you may have to play the sort of shot even a pro would struggle with?

One of my prized things in my reference library is a Tom Watson DVD 2 disc set and he gives what I feel are real life chipping tips from situations and lies that the average golfer might face. Give it a try , it's called lessons of a lifetime . I think it's about £20 ish.

also got this DVD, the man is a genius (Watson not London Mike..........but of course London Mike might be as well).

Watsons 'secret' would help the vast majority of handicap golfers imo

When you manage to find that one 'magic' wedge then shots off those sorts of lies, even short-sided ones, hold little fear.

I think I've got my 'magic' wedge because I seem to find little flops around the green soooo much easier than I used to. Best thing is, I found it totally by chance....for a tenner! Now, I'm not saying I chip like a pro - if I did I wouldn't be a mid handicapper - but this wedge has given me the confidence to forget about any danger and just go for it. I get it much closer than before, giving reasonable chances of getting up and down.

Magic Wedges! - Good luck with your search! :D

Oh, and I'm still searching for Magic wedge no2 with a loft of around 50*!

Thanks for the recommendation of the Tom Watson DVD above guys, I hadn't even heard of that DVD set before and the clips on YouTube look very good... Just ordered it off Amazon for £21

You don't need a video pal. Head down, Hands in front of the clubhead, pick a spot to land on and trust the loft to get the ball airborne no scooping. There is no secret

*Minor hijack alert*

Can anyone point me in the direction of some vids for chipping/pitching around 20-30 yards from the green?
Seems to be my achilles heel that one.

Yes I've watched Phil's (lefty) video. It's great and his basis for chipping is fantastic.
Get yourself a copy now!!!

It's not your chipping action that you need to change for muddy lies - better shot selection and realistic expectation for the result.

Ahhh the short game. My nemesis. Apparently there is another tip in the new GM magazine if it ever arrives!

Come on Homer surely by now you must be improving.
Seriously chipping is not hard.
Pick a club, pick a spot to land the ball, and let it run to the hole.
Depending on the length of the chip and green to work with will determine the club used.Simples !!!

Once you have a solid technique, you can use it from pretty much any lie, you just have to accept the ball is going to launch and react differently and adjust your expectation of the result. From a tricky lie, the aim should be to get it on the green, not taking on high tariff flop shots trying to get it near the hole.

I am probably the World's second worse chipper, despite having a 10.6 handicap, with the worst one also being a member of our club. I few years ago I got the putting yips and it then spread to my chipping. I have been known to make a complete air shot trying to make a chip, and have also shanked a few. However keeping your head very still and making the stroke as smooth and rhythmical as possible seems to help.

I'm actually stunned sometimes how I manage to play off single figures with the state of my short game. I think it says a lot about the rest of my game that I manage to shoot the scores I do. Starting today, it's all about short game for me: practice practice practice

Thought you didn't have time to practice:ears:
