Isn't it about time that the Masters became what it really is - an Invitational money spinner for a couple of dozen potential winners and about the same amount of old timers just showing up to make up the numbers??

Its not really a old traditional Major like the 2 opens and the USPGA has possibly the best field. This year there were only about 90 competitiors. Imagine Wimbledon with half the field taken up by Becker, Nastase etc with just a handful of decent players - nobody would consider that a Tennis Major so why do we rate the Masters as such??

Sure its a good tournament and deserves to be televised (badly) but surely the Players or Aussie open or something else should be in the frame. Maybe even one of the Dubai tournaments??

The Majors should be just that - where the best players compete.

Can't agree, if I could bag a major I would want in order -

Open Championship
Masters
US Open
USPGA

What you've said about missing top players is ridiculous. The top 50 ranked players in the world qualify automatically, 50 is plenty, how many do you want?

It's an invitational, not an open, that's how it evolved and it works pretty well, it is always visually the best golf event to watch, last 2 years have been a little disappointing in terms of a battle over the last 9 on Sunday but to try and demean the achievements of Lyle, Faldo, Woosnam, Olazabal, Ballesteros and Langer by making out some other open tournament would be more worthy of a major title is utter madness.

Could you not see the sheer deference Immelman had to winning - it is a massive title, as big as they get and the winners know that.

Adam Scott would swap his TPC title in an instant for a green jacket.

It is not to demean past winners, it is just that time moves on. What was once acceptable (no coloureds, no ladies, etc) is now no longer viewed as such. Same for me with invitationals. Interesting spectacle, but the whole concept of it is wrong. Majors should be opens (except the USPGA which is for members of that tour - fair enough, if you want to enter join the tour). It is wrong to have a major on a closed course (not even spectators can get in), with limited TV coverage, and a limited field of priviledged invitees.

Whilst I like the Masters as a tournament, the majors really need to reflect golf as the global sport that it is. Surely they should be spread around the globe rather than having 3 in the US. You may even gt more of the big names entering events outside the US as they enter tournaments to practice in the conditions.

How about the top ?? players from each of the US, European, Asian (and any other tours of your choice) in a five continent match play knock-out; no seeding, no missing events.

Only about a third of the top 100 players are from the USA, so if we are going to replace the Masters, then the new major should be outside the US.

I remember someone telling me that both the French and Australian Opens have been going longer than the Masters.

Maybe one of these would be a good replacement, if only they could find few million of dollars to add to the current prize fund?

Birdieman nailed it!

Can you not see,a Major is not just the field(WGC) it is because it is a MAJOR. They just are, thats it, full stop, end of.

The Open
US Open
Masters
US PGA

Ask Monty would he swap the PGA at Wentworth for a US Open and see the reaction.

Golfer1, does that mean we change the champion's league to the FA cup or English trophy because 2 English teams get into the final??
The Majors are Majors, and we leave it at that (IMO)
