I have a set of MacGregor M685 irons with rifle shafts, really like the clubs but have never really had any joy out of the 3 or 4 iron.

I played a round today and played out of some trees with my 3 iron but ended up wrapping the club round a tree, bending the shaft with no hope of repair.

Now I really dont know what exactly a rifle shaft is and what the effect is, what exactly are the characteristics of a rifle shaft? As I have struggled with my long irons should I consider a different shaft or go with a rifle shaft again? If so what's out there? My main problem has been lack of power and slicing and hooking with the 3 and 4 iron.

Thanks

You didn't say what flex the Rifles are - there'll be a number on the shaft band - and whether they are Flighted or not.

Rifle shafts are butt stiff/tip soft. Dynamic Gold (R300/S300) are butt soft/tip stiff - giving a lower flight.

If the Rifles are 'Flighted' then the shafts in the longer clubs will be selected to give a slightly higher flight than the mid irons.

Rifle shafts supplied to OEMs have often been significantly different to their stated flex. My recommendation is to take the entire set to a fitter and get them flex tested, then get the appropriate flex fitted to the 3. If a fitter is not available, then a replacement can be acquired; though erring on the softer side might be a good idea too - as newly fitted shafts often feel more solid.

Replacing all the shafts is an expensive business!

You could always do without the 3, using the 4 to perform future tree work and acquire a hybrid of 19-21* to replace the 3.
