Do you spend separate sessions on woods and irons at the range or mix it up? I struggle to hit my woods if I have hit a large amount of balls with my irons. Should I just practice woods one day and then irons the next?

I warm up with an 8 iron and then "play" my course.... although I do look a bit funny hitting my putter down the range.

I tend to warm up with 3 balls working form sw to driver, just using odds one visit then evens the next.

Then I would work on a particular skill, max 10 balls and keep a score, then I tend to play a game. By that I mean I tee off as if it was the 1st hole at my course, then dependant on shot play the relevant 2nd, 3rd, 4th shot. Then practise a couple of putts. Then play 2nd hole.

I find it better as you learn compensations if using the same club time after time.

practice the lot, that's what you'll be doing on the course

I love this idea, I has never thought of it before and will defiantly be giving it a try on my next visit.

you'll be a scratch range golfer in no time:lol:

Try;
5 fades
5 draws
5 high
5 low

do this with a;
low-med-high iron
Driver and FW

do these to order and your course shots will tumble

I sometimes go straight with the driver as I usually do so in competitions and we don't have good practice facilities

Interesting this I've been thinking of posting a thread like this

Ive been going to the range lunchtimes in the week through the winter

Get 50 balls

Take 4 clubs

Driver
Hybrid
Short iron
Wedge

Or similar combinations and hit balls as I would play one after another very rarely hit the same club more than once

Weekends take all clubs when I have more time but do the same thing with different combinations

I find this good for me

I have often taken just 1 club to the range.

I normally only take 3 clubs to the range - couple of irons and either hybrid or 3w. Will try some different shape shots but recently I've just been working on tempo and not bring the club back too far.

Not often that I'll take my driver I just don't like hitting it off rubber tees. There are some grass tees available, but they've been in a right mess with all the rain.

slowly build from half wedges, to full wedges, then work down the bag to driver, then work back up to wedges.

I swap between just hitting balls at targets like I would on the course and conciously breaking the swing down and working on what ever it is I am lookig to improve.

Don't use range as often as I should but when I do I usually just work on my irons from 6 or 7 thru to my wedges . I'll Hit a few in between with 18 degree hybrid and 3 wood off the deck to avoid using the rubber tees , which is why I'll rarely bother with driver.

Personally I tend to split my time/balls into

a) What I'm working on with my pro.

And

b) What caused me issue during my last round.

Usually they over lap slightly but that's how I split my time/balls.

Totally depends on why you are going to the range...and you should have a reason fro being there, even if its just to get away from wife and/or kids.

At the moment I'm getting some lessons so working purely on what I'm being taught 90% of balls are with a 7i.

I would normally ( before a round) go to the range loosen up with a wedge, then go down the odd number ( 9-7-5) finishing off with my driver the come back up the even number ( 4-6-8).

I do like the idea of giving yourself a challenge, keeping score and then bettering it next time. As long as its a realistic challenge and something you expect to be able to achieve based on Handicap. e.g. don't try and hit 300y draws if you are a 28 hc.

But as I say the key thing for the range is to have a goal for the session.

I agree that it's much better going there with something you're looking to work on, otherwise I can end up just firing balls aimlessly for a while before realising that I've not been paying much attention. Started taking my headphones along with me lately and listening to some tunes while I'm practicing. I'd always thought this would be off-putting but strange that it seems to help me keep my concentration on what I'm doing.
