So I hit the range this morning, to put some new swing thoughts to action after a 3 month break, and somebody happened to ruin a perfectly good session for me. I started off reasonably well, just warming up with some chips and half shots and then this fella comes along and sets up camp in the bay next to me. Not a problem, there was only 4 of us in a 50 bay range, but I'll let the fact he chose the bay next to me slide. Then as I was lining up using the mirror behind me I see out the corner of my eye him sitting on the bench behind MY bay watching my shots, crunching on some crisps, rustling a chocolate bar and slurping on a coffee! Put me under pressure, but then decided to use it to my advantage as this is a flaw of mine when people watch me on the course, but I started striping every shot long and straight so held onto my tongue a little longer and went with it!
Then he decided to start hitting, which I thought will give me a break, but oh no. There was two outcomes with this guy, a good shot, which caused a loud tennis like grunt, or a bad shot which was followed by the C word! Very off putting!
He would hit 10 balls sit down and watch me, hit another 10 and repeat. And the last straw was once I had hit my final ball, he started to peer over into my bay, I put my head cover on my driver and span around to see him at the edge of my bay with all his stuff in hand asking if I was finished here, whilst walking onto the mat I was standing on before I had even picked up my keys and phone!
Ok, I was finished, and I know this isn't a course, but we all play this game and know its about common decency, respect and etiquette, I decided to hold my tongue as I was indeed leaving, but wondered what you all thought in terms of peoples etiquette at the range and whether to expect more or just understand its for anyone to go whack some balls?

Rant over!

I would'nt say anything,as if he does'nt realise how irratating hes actions were,I doubt you saying anything would help.If you cant control your emotions on a driving range, whats this guy like on the course!!

Did the other bloke's bay have a mirror behind him? Or was your bay in ' the best ' position on the range?

There is a mirror every other bay, so 25 in total and only 3 being used before he turned up. No I like to be alone so went right out of the way of the good bays. Maybe his lucky bay?

This is why I just left, he isn't going to change because of me. Maybe I need to befriend him cause he was making me play better!
Feel sorry for his playing partners

Tip: never put all your balls into the automatic loaders (if there were any). Gives you a chance to pick up what you've got left and move to the other end of the range!

I us a couple of local ranges and while one does get a few teenagers down there playing the fool, the others are pretty good. Most golfers down there are there to work on their game. I rarely have any issues with anyone interfering. If I hade been the OP, I'd have been tempted to make the point by simply moving bay. No need for words.

the way to deal with this is to strike up some conversation. talk to him about what you are working on, what he is struggling with!

you never know, you guys may have missed a bromance ! ;)

Ha ha this thought never once came into my mind! Maybe I should have had a seat and watched him hit a few, return the favour ...

ranges can sometimes be a strange atmosphere. no one talking just smashing balls. boys trying to out drive others and just an overall feeling of treading on eggshells. don't make too much noise etc.

how many times have you go to the range. tired to work on a problem but failed when the guy next to you may have been able give you a little tip to send you on your way!

I much prefer if I can having a friendly chat to those nearby. chatting about golf in general, and swing thoughts if that's their bag!

Didn't even know there was such a thing as Range Etiquette ;)

You get all sorts at a range, especially at busy times, you just have to get on with it.

Really, the only thing here is the expletives after a bad shot
The rest is nothing to get worked up over
The fact that he was watching you , you could take as a compliment

Ps we miss many opportunities in life

He could have been your new best friend, with memberships at Wentworth and Lochnwhateveritsname is and wants someone to play with ;)

MOVE bays, now that is not a very nice thing to do and against everything golf stands for,in these times when clubs need members you should have taken him home got your wife to cook him some tee before taking him to your club for a game and getting him to join as you will pay the green fees.

To be honest when he asked if you were finished there I'd have said 'no, I'm just going to get another bucket of 100' on principle, and then hit another hundred in the same manner he had hit his balls. Hitting 10, stopping for a few minutes (to 'think' about the shots of course) and then repeating.

I'm normally a very polite and reserved person, but I find that people like that do not learn manners unless you treat them to the same respect (or lack thereof) that they're showing you.

You should have told him to Mod Edit.
Mod Edit to any imaginary range etiquette........"Mod Edit jog on" would have sufficed, in this instance, I think!

is the correct answer, unless you think your better than everyone else and the world revolves around YOU.

I never said there was such a thing as range etiquette, the OP was to ask others their views on others behaviour at the range and if people think there should be etiquette or not. I never once implied the world revolves around me, just writing up an experience of someone else I've had at the range. Surely the whole point of a forum to share experiences and get others feedback on situations?
