Random Irritations

It’s been 7 (busy) days since I got back to UK & most things have gone very well, but I’ll guess ppl would rather read about irritations..

  • Argos home del service is really poor, they suck you in to make an order giving the appearance items are in stock and you can choose del date but once ordered these dates wont be met and they ‘blame’ partners. If your partners are so poor why partner with them!
  • What happened to queen sized beds? It was single double, queen, king now it goes single, double, king, super-king, and while I’m on the topic of beds, what happened to flat sheets, most retailers we went in no longer sell them
  • Amazon are way too easy to order from. Wanted some ‘back to black’ car polish (common as muck back in the day) but couldn’t see it in stores, but sitting in garden last night and amazon says I’ll have it in less than 24hrs
  • Why does every restaurant, pub, café etc ask if I have any allergies but I’m never asked the same Q in any fast-food joints or takeaways
  • Where have all the post boxes gone?
  • As expected some stuff is very expensive here… although on the flip side, some stuff is really really cheap compared to old place
  • Why isn’t my handicap CDH number the same worldwide
  • Lemon and lime jaffa cakes, its like taking the wheel and bringing out a square version!

Welcome back 😂

It’s like coming back to civilisation after r spending years on a desert island 😁

Again, motorway speed limits.

M6 northbound through Birmingham this morning. 5.30am. Hardly any traffic. But I still hit the permanently set 50, 40, 50, 40 on successive gantries with the final two warning of a queue ahead. This despite there being literally half a dozen vehicles ahead of me, with no lane closures or any obstruction. And the limits have to be adhered to because of the plethora of speed cameras.

Ludicrously crass mismanagement by National Highways.
Maybe managing early morning noise pollution? Maybe also such restrictions trying to limit the idiots who'd drive at 100mph when the motorway is empty.🤷‍♂️

Here’s another one, I bought a dash cam and in first pic in booklet it says it has an SD card slot… knowing I can’t use the thing without it I buy one (64gb) … card arrives and of course it doesn't fit. Then i see several pagers further it says it requires a Micro SD card!

Clearly a case of all micro SD cards are SD cards but not all SD cards are micro

You was much more fun when you lived in paradise 😂.
Welcome home mate

Well hacked off

Going to Shetland & Orkney in August
Flying Heathrow to Aberdeen, then to Shetland on the Saturday
Shetland to Orkney on the Wednesday
Then Orkney- Aberdeen - Heathrow on the Sunday, flights , hotels, car hire all booked.

Email this morning to say that the Loganair flight from Shetland to Orkney is cancelled, no other flights that day, no flights Thursday
There are flights on Tuesday, but you have to go via Aberdeen. And it’s extra dosh

Only option is to get the 5 1/2 hour ferry which gets in at 11 pm at night

So I’ve had to call the hotel for a late check in and Re-jig the car hire because Loganair have cancelled on us

If we cancel, we forfeit the cost of our tickets, if they cancel, there is no penalty, which seems wrong
Grrrrr

Whatever you do, do not accept their offer of cancellation and refund; this instantly absolves them of any further responsibility.

You do have the right to be rerouted, at a time convenient to YOU (not the airline), with another carrier if necessary (OK this right may be of limited use on a niche route like this one) , and this should not cost you any extra - you will likely need to call them and you may need to escalate to the Supervisor as airlines aren't always good at this and generally try and nudge people towards a refund-and-now-its-your-own-problem solution.

Specifically here - if you can make the Tues flight via Aberdeen work, you should escalate that; otherwise get on google flights and see if there are any other reasonable solutions.

EDIT: on a quick search there are still Loganair tickets for cash on every Weds in Aug from Shetland to Orkney via Aberdeen; 4.25pm arriving 7.35pm. I'd be pushing quite hard to get one of these with the supervisor. Again - it should not cost you a penny extra.

Nope. It’s mismanagement, pure and simple. Anyone who drives the M6 through Birmingham will tell you exactly the same. Random speed limits, changing from gantry to gantry, with no logic to them.

They are clearly set for peak periods and not actively and dynamically managed. They have speed cameras all the way through there which will manage those who want to do 100mph on an empty motorway - they will be correctly set when there isn’t a reduced limit in force.

Having spent so long doing that route it's nothing to do with Noise pollution or idiots as you call it. During peak times that roads so congested you can't do any sort of speed and theres more pollution form the volume of cars slowed to a crawl than there is from noise.

In the quiet hours it's not an overly busy stretch and most doing the journey are long range commuters, it's simply a poorly programmed version of a smart motorway with untold amounts of cameras, they must make a killing out of people in fines with the constant fluctuation of speeds of 40,50,60 changing from Gantry to gantry.

Oh I get the frustration...last few months I've done a bit of very late evening/early morning driving from home up the M3, M25, M4 into Hammersmith. The motorways have generally been v quiet (lovely) but keeping track of the variable speed limit is a pain and more than once I've thought I've been caught on camera...though (touch wood) I haven't yet.

I wanted a new bed a couple of years back, finding queen size was not a problem but I wanted large single (3'6" sometimes called European single) I had to go online to get one. Similarly to get fitted sheets for it I had to go online.
