The term “birdie” comes from an American named Ab Smith. While playing a round in 1899, he played what he described as a “bird of a shot”, which became “birdie” over time.

The modern list of majors (Masters, US Open, Open, PGA) were agreed by Arnold Palmer and journalist Bob Drum on a flight over to the UK for The Open in 1960, after Palmer had won The Masters and The US Open. After Drum published an article on it, the 4 were adopted by acclamation.

In Bobby Jones' day the two Opens and 2 Amateurs were considered majors and at other times events including the Western Open and North and South Amateur were considered majors.

The Lowest Score for a round of golf in the world is a 57. Wayne Meyers of Easley, S.C. was the hero at Southern Oaks golf course in Powdersville, South Carolina, USA in 1994.

They were influential rather than powerful. Palmer had won the Masters and US Open and after he and Drum talked on the plane the article said that if he won The Open and PGA he would have achieved a modern version of the Bobby Jones 1930 slam of both Opens and both Amateurs. So it kinda caught on from that and soon came to be regarded as the new roster of majors.

Golf was played for over 300 years without Rules!

Only the (lack of the) concept of a Stymie is any different from the original 13 - and that was only completely dropped in the 1950s! Though the concept of the Putting Green (and specific rules about it) was/is relatively new (again, 1950s) too.
