It might sound like a slow day (posting weird stuff), but I'm posting this for anyone, should they encounter a similar thing.

Last year, our Fridge/Freezer died after less than 3 years. Pretty shoddy, I say. We had an expert repairer look at it and he said some sealed (gas??) unit was broken and irreparable.

Anyway, the new one totally gave up last week and we assumed the worst. I 'phoned around and after much hassle, spoke to a guy who works on frost-free models. (ooh-err).

So, to cut a long story short, these new technology units are problematic to say the least. If they accidentally frost up, they'll stop working...(this might happen if you leave the door open long enough or overfill it (?) or other situations).

If you should have a frost-free and it seems to have died, it might not be terminal. Turn it off for 36 hours, of dismantle the panel and get a hairdryer to the radiator (in reverse) thing.
Please note the placement of any connectors rather than pull it all apart and then have no bloomin' idea.....
Get it free from ice/frost and plug it back in - it might start working OK!

Nowt wrong with it. Just got impossibly iced up and couldn't do it's job.

Just so you know.

Dave , this is my game !!!

Don't forget to check door seals as well because if warm air is getting into the freezer compartment , this will cause icing up too.

out of interest , what make is it ?

.....Oh , and this is a very very good site for info on whitegood faults.....honest and unbiased advice www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk

Top Man.....

It's a BEKO. Working fine (we think).....the fan is not running much though???

PS. There were four connectors (white/grey/black/red) that went into a junction behind the plastic panel. I'm guessing as they are all different shaped ends, there's only 1 way of putting them back in the box???

I put them in (going down) white grey black red......

Connectors are normally 'keyed' so most times it's impossible to put them in wrong........but people do manage it !!!

I actually work on Neff/Bosch/Siemens stuff so don't know the Beko gear.....but they all work in generally the same way.

TBH , any temperature/icing up probs in a fridge freezer i would always recommend a full defrost first just in case t is a simple fix.

Whilst most F/F's are fairly basic in their workings , when they do go wrong they can be a bit tricky to diagnose.

Cool..."keyed" being the technical term for small changes in the plug housing to make an exact individual fit...

I guess if I'd got it wrong, it'd not be working!!!

Thanks...

I have a hotpoint FF and the bloody thing gets really noisy when it needs a defrost. Just done mine tonight using the very method you described Dave. Also found the drain hole was blocked causing water in the freezer which then ran inside the freezer compartment and then froze. Mine is about 6 years old and needs a bit of maintenance evry 12 months.

It's a silly business. With an old style freezer, you can see the ice and just get on and defrost it. Most of the ice on mine was hidden behind a plastic panel.

I just really grateful to the chap who told me to get the panel off and "see the enemy"....without his knowledge, I'd have presumed it was defrosted and not seen all the bloomin ice!!

The best way to defrost....and it does make it difficult to organize if you have a full freezer....is a full 48hr machine switch off defrost.

applinace unplugged , Doors open , towels round the base......no chance of any damage then , which customers of mine have done....scraping ice off witha screwdriver , slipped , driver tip through pipe - Appliance written off !!!
